Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Your brother in Allah, Bandar Abdullah, asks in this question: What is the exegesis of the noble verse:
They saw them [to be] twice their [own] number by [their] eyesightيَرَوْنَهُمْ مِثْلَيْهِمْ رَأْيَ الْعَيْنِ
[Al-Imran:13] in Surat al-Imran, given that the verse is mentioned in Surat al-Tawbah?

The Shaykh: Surat al-Anfal.

The presenter: Or Surat al-Anfal?

Answer:
The point is that this refers to the Day of Badr, and Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) decreed by His just judgment to make them appear few in the eyes of both these and those:
And [remember] when He showed them to you, when you met, as few in your eyes, and He made you [appear] as few in their eyes so that Allah might accomplish a matter already destinedوَإِذْ يُرِيكُمُوهُمْ إِذِ الْتَقَيْتُمْ فِي أَعْيُنِكُمْ قَلِيلًا وَيُقَلِّلُكُمْ فِي أَعْيُنِهِمْ لِيَقْضِيَ اللَّهُ أَمْرًا كَانَ مَفْعُولًا
[Al-Anfal:44] When they drew near, each one saw the other as few. When they drew near, the Companions saw them as few, and the disbelievers saw the Companions as few; until some of them could overcome some of the others, meaning until some of them charged at the others, until Allah judged between them, and Allah killed their leaders, and He gave victory to the Muslims over them. At first, they saw them as twice their number. It was said: The Muslims saw the disbelievers as twice their number.
And it was said: The disbelievers saw the Muslims as twice their number. When some of them drew near to some of the others, and they came into contact with one another, each one saw his opponent as fewer than himself; until this one would advance upon this one, and this one upon this one:
And [remember] when He showed them to you, when you met, as few in your eyes, and He made you [appear] as few in their eyes so that Allah might accomplish a matter already destined. And to Allah are [all] matters returned.
[Al-Anfal:44] So Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) made the reduction of these in the face of these, and these in the face of these, one of the causes of advancing; until all of them engaged in close combat, and Allah gave victory to the Muslims and humiliated the disbelievers. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh.
