The Meaning of Subjugating Men

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, Mahmoud al-Qatroti from the Libyan Jamahiriya, says: I hear many people in their supplication saying:
being overcome by debt and being put in subjection by menاللهم إنا نعوذ بك من غلبة الدين، وقهر الرجال
Sunan Abi Dawud 1555Da'if (Al-Albani)
What is the meaning of subjugating men?

Answer:
This is a supplication established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He used to supplicate with this, saying:
O Allah! I seek refuge with You from worry and grief, from incapacity and laziness, from cowardice and miserliness, from being heavily in debt and from being overpowered by (other) men.اللهم إني أعوذ بك من الهم والحزن، والعجز والكسل، والجبن والبخل، وأعوذ بك من غلبة الدين، وقهر الرجال
Sahih al-Bukhari 6369
It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him), and this is one of his great supplications, narrated by Muslim and others.
So the dominance of debt is known, meaning: the heaviness of the debt and his inability to settle it.
And the subjugation of men... that they dominate him... that they subjugate him until they kill him, or take his wealth, or humiliate him, or beat him, and so on. So he seeks refuge in Allah from the dominance of debt and the subjugation of men. If he is unable to handle the debt, it occupies his mind a lot and worries him a lot, and perhaps his family also tires him out with demands and lawsuits, and they do not know of his inability or the reality of his situation.
And the subjugation of men—without doubt—is a great calamity, whether they subjugate him to kill him, or subjugate him to take his wealth, or some of his wealth, or subjugate him to beat him, or subjugate him to other things that harm him. All of it is evil, all of it is a great trial, and a great calamity. Therefore, Allah prescribed seeking refuge from that. Yes.
