The meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted: "As for the orphan, do not oppress him," and the explanation of being gentle with children and orphans.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We continue and complete this surah, if Allah wills, until we reach what our imam recited tonight.
Allah the Exalted said:
So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]. فأما اليتيم فلا تقهر
[Ad-Duhaa 93:9]
in contrast to
Did He not find you an orphan and give [you] refuge? ألم يجدك يتيما فآوى
[Ad-Duhaa 93:6]
meaning that as long as Allah has taken him in and he is an orphan, one must know the condition of the orphan.
So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]. فأما اليتيم فلا تقهر
[Ad-Duhaa 93:9]
The orphan, as mentioned before, is one whose father died before he reached puberty. Allah has commanded us to be kind to him in His Book, and so has His Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
So as for the orphan, do not oppress [him]. فأما اليتيم فلا تقهر
[Ad-Duhaa 93:9]
But his home is his home, so make room for him and make things easy for him. Likewise, we should do the same with young children; we should not oppress them. A small child does not have full reason; he may enter upon a group of elders, the nobles of the town, the people of the town, and the prominent men of the town, and he will jump around in front of them, will he not? You will find him jumping on his feet among these men because he does not reason.
Some people get angry at this and say to the boy, "Sit down, sit down, go to the house," and the like. This is a mistake. Let the boy move around, run about, and be at ease, because if you oppress him and suppress him, it will become a knot in his mind. Then, is this from the guidance of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him)?
The answer is: No. Rather, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to joke with the children. In fact, he said to a boy one day:
Abu ‘Umair! What has happened to the little sparrow? يا أبا عمير ما فعل النغير
Sunan Abi Dawud 4969Sahih (Al-Albani)
What is this talk?
Abu ‘Umair! What has happened to the little sparrow? يا أبا عمير ما فعل النغير
Sunan Abi Dawud 4969Sahih (Al-Albani)
The naghir is a small bird. This boy was playing with it, happy with the bird he was playing with, just as our boys now play with small sparrows and are happy with them. So the naghir died. The naghir died, and it was beloved to Abu 'Amir, so he was sad. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to joke with him, saying:
Abu ‘Umair! What has happened to the little sparrow? يا أبا عمير ما فعل النغير
Sunan Abi Dawud 4969Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
On one day, he was leading people in prayer when al-Hasan or al-Husayn (may Allah be pleased with them) came to him while he was in prostration and climbed onto his back, wanting to make him what? A camel for him to ride. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in prostration, so he lengthened his prostration. When he finished his prayer, he said to the people:
Indeed, my son has made me a mount, and I disliked to stand up until he had satisfied his desire. إن ابني ارتحلني وإنني كرهت أن أقوم حتى يقضي نهمته
Allah is the Greatest. What do you think? If a person were an imam among people, and a man were behind him, and a boy came and climbed on him, what would happen?
Answer, my brothers. He would push him away with his hand, but he would not say "get down," because if he said "get down," his prayer would be invalid. But with his hand, he would push him away. As for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while he was leading the most noble of communities, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), he remained [in prostration].
Likewise, Umm Amarah, the daughter of Zaynab, the daughter of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), was with him while he was leading people in prayer.
So he used to lead people in prayer while carrying this girl. When he stood up, he would carry her, and when he prostrated, he would put her down. فكان يصلي بالناس وهو حامل هذه الطفلة فإذا قام حملها وإذا سجد وضعها
He was leading people in prayer. Is this not gentleness? Answer: Yes, it is gentleness. So it is upon us, my brothers, to be gentle with the boys and to make things easy for them in matters. Some people say, "If I let the boys come to the people in the gathering and play, they will get used to this." We say this is not correct, because when we were young, we used to play with people in the gatherings. And when we grew up, did we play? Answer, everyone: We do not play. These boys are playing now, but when they grow up and understand, they will not play. Let them be; do not imprison their freedom. Let the boy run about. Let them be happy. Let the whole world be spacious for them, except for one thing: we must not enable them to do it. What is it? The haram. The haram: we do not enable them to do it.
So if the boy says, "I love that singer, leave the television open so I can watch him," what do we say? What do we say? No, no. We do not enable him, because if we enable him to do this, he will get used to it.
He will get used to it, except by the gentleness of Allah the Mighty and Majestic.
