Question:
The questioner, whose name is indicated by this symbol (R. H. R), asks: What should one do if his parents have died and he was undutiful to them, and he is now regretful of this undutifulness after their passing, and he does not know what to do until Allah accepts his repentance? May Allah reward you with good, O Shaykh?
Answer:
He must repent to Allah. Every sin has a path to repentance. If one dies while being undutiful to his parents, he must repent to Allah. Or if he was wronging someone, he must repent to Allah. This includes regret, ceasing the sin, and supplicating for them with forgiveness and mercy. He should increase his supplication for them and give charity on their behalf. This alleviates his burden and removes the sin from him. Repentance wipes out what came before it. Praise be to Allah.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) said: [Al-Anfal: 38]. So if disbelief is forgiven through repentance, then undutifulness to parents is all the more so.
Therefore, it is obligatory for one who was undutiful to his parents, or to one of them, or who cut off his family ties, to repent to Allah, and to maintain ties with them after death by supplicating for them, fulfilling their lawful bequests, and honoring their friends and relatives. All of this is part of being dutiful to them after death. A man said: O Messenger of Allah! Is there any part of dutifulness to my parents remaining by which I can be dutiful to them after their death? He said: the funeral prayer.

Maintaining ties with all of them is part of repentance. Maintaining ties with them and supplicating for the parents, and supplicating for the relatives whom you cut off and who have died, supplicating for them and seeking mercy for them, honoring their friends, giving charity on their behalf, and fulfilling their lawful bequests. All of this is a reward for them and among the means of expiating sins.
