The Ruling on Whispers That Reach the Level of Associating Partners with Allah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Does a person sin and be held accountable for what his soul suggests to him, especially if what it suggests is shirk (associating partners with Allah), may Allah protect us from it?

Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explained its remedy. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah, the Most High, has forgiven my followers what they contemplate on within themselves (i.e. evil thoughts) as long as they do not act upon or speak about them.
Bulugh al-Maram 8:133
The whispers of the soul do no harm. These are whispers. The Companions asked about them, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to them:
Say: "We have believed in Allah and His Messengers," and seek refuge in Allah from Satan. They said: "O Messenger of Allah, one of us finds in his soul something that would be easier for him to fall from the sky than to speak." He said: "That is from Satan—that whisper. When one of you finds that, let him say: 'We have believed in Allah and His Messengers'; let him seek refuge in Allah, and let him stop."
These are the whispers of Satan. Allah does not hold a person accountable for them as long as he does not act on them or speak them.
