The Ruling on Swearing by One's Honor and Other Things

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our brother from al-Zulfi asks: Is it permissible to swear by one's honor by saying to his brother, "By your honor," or "By your prayer," or by saying, "By the sacredness of the place, if you did such and such"? Such customs are widespread among women and children. We ask for guidance. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
It is not permissible to swear, neither by prayer, nor by honor, nor by the sacredness of the place, nor by anything else of the created things. Swearing is by Allah alone. So one should not say, "By my honor, I did not do such and such," nor "By so-and-so's honor," nor "By my life," nor "By my prayer." Nor should one be urged to say, "Say: By my honor," or "Say: By my prayer," or "Say: By my zakah." All of this has no basis and is not permissible; because prayer is the action of the servants, and zakah is the action of the servants, and the actions of the servants are not sworn by. Rather, swearing is by Allah alone . The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever has to take an oath should swear by Allah or remain silent.من كان حالفًا فليحلف بالله أو ليصمت
Sahih al-Bukhari 2679
. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
whoever swears by anything other than Allah has committed an act of shirk.من حلف بشيء دون الله فقد أشرك
Musnad Ahmad 329Sahih (Darussalam)
, narrated by Imam Ahmad with a sound chain from 'Umar (may Allah have mercy on him) . And Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi narrated it with a sound chain from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
He who swears by anyone or anything other than Allah, has indeed committed an act of Kufr or Shirkمن حلف بغير الله فقد كفر أو أشرك
Riyad as-Salihin 1711
. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who swears by Amanah (faithfulness) is not one of us.من حلف بالأمانة فليس منا
Sunan Abi Dawud 3253Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
So it is obligatory for every believing man and woman to beware of that and not to swear except by Allah alone . One says, "By Allah, I did not do such and such," or "By Allah, I did not do such and such," when there is a need. And it is prescribed that one guard his oath and not swear except when there is a need. Allah the Exalted said:
And keep your oathsوَاحْفَظُوا أَيْمَانَكُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah: 89]. But when there is a need, one swears, saying, "By Allah, I did not do such and such," if he is truthful, or "By Allah, I did not go to so-and-so," or "By Allah, I did not do such and such," or "By Allah, I did not do such and such," if he is truthful. This is an oath by Allah . As for swearing by anything else, such as trust, or the Prophet, or the Ka'bah, or so-and-so's life, or so-and-so's honor, or my prayer, or my honor, that is not permissible.
As for if he says, "It is in my honor," that is not an oath. This is not an oath. "It is in my honor" means: this thing is in my honor as a trust, or I will not betray it, or something similar to that. This is not an oath. But if he says, "By my honor," or "By my prayer," or "By my zakah," or "By my life," or "By my father's life," that is not permissible. This is swearing by other than Allah . We ask Allah for guidance for everyone.

The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.
