Question:
The questioner, Fayzah Yusuf from Egypt - Qena, says: Is it permissible for me to visit graves for the sake of taking a lesson, and not for wailing? Because I know that it is forbidden for women, but I like to remember the Hereafter. What is the wisdom behind preventing women from visiting graves? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded the visiting of graves, saying:Sunan Ibn Majah 1569Sahih (Darussalam). He cursed the women who visit graves. The scholars mentioned that the wisdom in this is that they generally do not have patience; and because they are a fitnah (trial/temptation). If they visit graves, it may happen that they engage in crying, wailing, and things that are not appropriate due to their general lack of patience; and because they may mix with men, which becomes a fitnah. And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) is the Wise, the All-Knowing; He does not prohibit anything except for a profound wisdom . He is the Wise in His speech, His action, His legislation, and His decree, (Exalted and Majestic is He).
And among His wisdom (Exalted is He) is the prohibition of women from visiting graves, either because they are a fitnah, or because of their lack of patience, or because of both matters, or because of other matters as well. But praise be to Allah, they have supplication. They supplicate for their deceased in their homes and in every place, and they pray for the funerals in the mosque or in the prayer area. All of this is permitted, and praise be to Allah. So she supplicates for her relative and her husband in her home and in every place, seeks forgiveness for him, and gives charity on his behalf. All of this is good and benefits the deceased, from both men and women.
As for visiting graves, it is specific to men; because the Messenger (peace be upon him) said:Sunan Ibn Majah 1569Sahih (Darussalam), and he prohibited them from it. Umm Atiyyah said: Sunan Ibn Majah 1577Sahih (Darussalam). Yes.
