The ruling on letting trousers hang below the ankles and garments to the middle of the leg

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A listener from Dammam, the brother Fahd Ibrahim, mentions his P.O. box number and postal code, and he has a number of questions.
In his first question, he says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from wearing a long garment that extends above the ankles. Does the ruling apply to wearing trousers, and is there a hadith indicating that the garment should be shortened to the middle of the leg? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Yes, it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that the belt of the believer is at the middle of his leg, and there is no blame on him if he lets it hang down to the ankle. It is also authentic from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Whatever of the Izar comes below the ankles is in the Fire.ما أسفل من الكعبين من الإزار فهو في النار
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5331Sahih (Darussalam)
, and this encompasses all clothing; it encompasses trousers, the izar, the sarawil, the shirt, the bishat, and other clothing. It is obligatory for the male believer that his clothing be at the level of the ankle, not hanging below the ankle.
As for the woman, the Sunnah for her is to let her garments hang down so that they cover her feet, unless she has socks on her feet, in which case there is nothing wrong with it. There is nothing wrong with the foot being visible if she is wearing socks.
The point is that a man is not allowed to let his garment hang below the ankle; the limit is the ankle, whether it is an izar, a shirt, trousers, a bishat, or anything else. This is because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade isbal (letting the garment hang below the ankles) and emphasized this (peace and blessings be upon him). If it is done out of arrogance, the sin becomes greater. If the letting down is for arrogance, pride, and ostentation, the sin becomes greater, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever arrogantly drags his garment, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Judgement.من جر ثوبه خيلاء؛ لم ينظر الله إليه يوم القيامة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1731Sahih (Darussalam)
.
So it is obligatory for the believer to seek the Sunnah in this matter, to avoid the clothing of the arrogant, and to avoid being thought of as having this evil. He should raise his garments to the middle of the leg or less, from the middle or less down to the ankle. This is what is prescribed. If he is in an environment where people criticize him for this and he is harmed by it, there is no need for him to raise it to the middle of the leg. Praise be to Allah, he has a dispensation. He can let it hang to the ankle, praise be to Allah, and he can rest from the harm, and there is nothing wrong with it, because it is only a Sunnah, a recommended practice. What is forbidden is hanging below the ankle; that is what is forbidden. As for from the ankle to the middle, this is all permitted, praise be to Allah. Yes.
