Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A listener from Riyadh—his name is 'Umar Ibrahim Sudani—sent a message containing several questions:
In his first question, he says: It is mentioned in the book *Al-'Aqidah al-Wasitiyyah* by the Shaykh al-Islam on page (88): A questioner asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): "Where was our Lord before He created the heavens and the earth?" And He answered: "He was in 'ama'..." the hadith. What is the meaning of this hadith?

Answer:
The meaning of this hadith is: He was in a cloud. The scholars said: The meaning of "'ama'" is cloud. Some of them said: thick. And some of them said: thin.
And there is some criticism regarding the chain of this hadith.
And Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) possesses attributes of perfection from all angles, and is free from attributes of deficiency and flaw from all angles , as He said (Mighty and Majestic) :
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قُلْ هُوَ اللَّهُ أَحَدٌ ۝
[Al-Ikhlas 112:1]
[Al-Ikhlas], and He said (Mighty and Majestic) :
There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the Hearing, the Seeing.لَيْسَ كَمِثْلِهِ شَيْءٌ وَهُوَ السَّمِيعُ البَصِيرُ
[Al-Shura: 11].
And this hadith is famous from the hadith of Abu Razin al-'Aqili, narrated by Waki' ibn Haddas, and this man—Waki'—is not among those known for reliability.
And in this hadith, when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked: "Where was our Lord before He created the heavens and the earth?" he said:
He was in 'ama', with air above Him and air below Himكان في عماء، ما فوقه هواء، وما تحته هواء
Sahih Ibn Hibban 62:4
, if it is authentic, then the meaning is as the scholars—scholars of language—said: "'ama'" is cloud. Some of them said: thin cloud. And some of them said: thick cloud. This is its meaning if it is authentic. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
