The ruling on one who swore to quit smoking and then returned to it
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: I swore an oath to quit smoking, and I did quit for a certain period, but I went back. What is the ruling on what I did? And what should I do if I owe an expiation? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
You must repent to Allah, because smoking is forbidden, foul, and has many harms. So you must repent to Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and you must avoid sitting with smokers, for sitting with them is one of the causes of your returning to it.
You also owe the expiation for the oath, which is feeding ten poor people, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. If you are poor and unable, lacking the means for food, clothing, or freeing a slave, then you fast three days. This is the expiation for the oath. Allah, Glorified and Exalted, said: [Al-Ma'idah: 89] the verse in Surat al-Ma'idah. So the Lord, Mighty and Majestic, commands us with the expiation from the middle of food, or clothing, or freeing a slave. If the one who swore is unable, he fasts three days. He also commanded the preservation of oaths, and that it is not befitting for a person to swear except when there is a need.
And smoking has much evil. It should be, O servant of Allah! O questioner! that you beware of it and persist in leaving it, and that you do not sit with its people, and that you advise them, perhaps Allah will guide you and guide through you. May Allah bless you. Yes.

Allah will not impose blame upon you for what is meaningless in your oaths, but He will impose blame upon you for [breaking] what you intended of oaths. So its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it] - then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths
