Who slaughters for his father and grandfather every year

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I have a cousin who slaughters an animal for his father and grandfather after the passage of every lunar year. I have advised him more than once, and he says to me: "I asked, and they said there is no sin in that." Please inform us whether this statement is correct or not?

A: If he slaughters and intends it as a sacrificial offering (udhiyah) on the day of Eid and the days of sacrifice for his father, grandfather, or anyone else, there is no harm. Or if he slaughters and intends it as charity for them for the poor at any time, there is no harm; because charity benefits the deceased and the living, whether in the form of meat or other things like money and food. All of this benefits the deceased and the living. It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he was asked about a man who gives charity for his mother after her death, and whether she gets reward for it, and he said:
Yesنعم
. And in Sahih Muslim (may Allah have mercy on him), it is narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end except for three things: Sadaqah Jariyah (ceaseless charity); a knowledge which is beneficial, or a virtuous descendant who prays for him (for the deceased).إذا مات ابن آدم انقطع عمله إلا من ثلاث: صدقة جارية أو علم ينتفع به أو ولد صالح يدعو له
Riyad as-Salihin 1383
.
The summary is that charity for the deceased is beneficial for him by the consensus of the Muslims, and so is supplication for him. If he intends with this slaughtered animal to give charity for his father, grandfather, or anyone else, or slaughters it as a sacrificial offering for them on the days of sacrifice to draw near to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), that is fine. However, he must not designate a specific day or a specific month for slaughtering other than the days of sacrifice, unless he seeks out the virtuous times, such as Ramadan and the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah. In that case, there is no harm, and he will have reward, and the deceased will have reward according to his sincerity to Allah and his good deeds.
As for if he intends to draw near to the deceased as those who slaughter for the people of graves, or the sun, or the moon, or the jinn, that is major shirk (associating partners with Allah); because it is not permissible for anyone to draw near to anyone by slaughtering, or a vow, or any other form of worship other than Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), as Allah (the Exalted) said::
(162) Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. (163) No partner has He. And this I have been commanded, and I am the first [among you] of the Muslims."
[Al-An'am: 162-163], and as He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said::
(1) Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar. (2) So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ فَصَلِّ لِرَبِّكَ وَانْحَرْ
[Al-Kawthar: 1-2], and as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah cursed him who sacrificed for anyone besides Allahلعن الله من ذبح لغير الله
Sahih Muslim 1978b
, narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. So, slaughtering for the jinn, or for the people of graves, or for any other created things like idols, stars, and the like, hoping for their intercession, or that they will benefit him, or that they will remove a disease from him or something else, is blameworthy and shirk. Likewise, whoever slaughters for his grandfather or his father believing that it will benefit him, or cure his sick person, or bring him closer to Allah through this slaughter, is like the one who slaughters for the sun, the moon, or the stars. All of this is shirk. We ask Allah for safety.
