Question:
The first message in this episode is one that reached the program from the Holy City of Madinah, sent by one of the female listeners from there. She says: Umm 'Abir, Umm 'Abir has four questions. In her first question, she asks: Does slaughtering fall under the category of charity? And if I want to slaughter in order to give charity on behalf of a deceased person, is this permissible?
Please guide us, may Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance. As for what follows:
There is no doubt that slaughtering for the sake of Allah and drawing near to Him through it is among the best of charities and among the best of acts of drawing near, as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: :
Say, "Indeed, my prayer, my rites of sacrificeقُلْ إِنَّ صَلاتِي وَنُسُكِي
[Al-An'am 6:162]
meaning: My sacrifice
my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds.وَمَحْيَايَ وَمَمَاتِي لِلَّهِ رَبِّ الْعَالَمِينَ ۝
[Al-An'am 6:162]
has no partner with Him, and for that I have been commanded, and I am the first of the Muslims [Al-An'am: 162-163]. And He the Exalted said:
Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar.إِنَّا أَعْطَيْنَاكَ الْكَوْثَرَ ۝
[Al-Kawthar 108:1]
So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [Al-Kawthar: 1-2].
So drawing near to Allah through slaughtered animals contains great good; for this reason, Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) prescribed the 'Id sacrifice on the days of the Festival of Sacrifice. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to sacrifice with two white, speckled rams every year (peace and blessings be upon him), one on behalf of himself and his family, and the other on behalf of those of his Ummah who declared the oneness of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him).
So if a person slaughters an animal intending thereby to draw near to Allah and to benefit the poor, to benefit the poor and do them good, there is nothing wrong with that. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to slaughter an animal at times and distribute it among the close friends of his wife Khadijah (may Allah be pleased with her), and likewise giving in charity money, or food such as dates or rice or otherwise, or clothing, all of that is an act of drawing near and obedience if it is for Allah alone in the manner that Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has prescribed.
As for slaughtering in order to draw near to the dead, such as slaughtering for al-Badawi or for al-Husayn or for Shaykh 'Abd al-Qadir al-Jilani, intending to draw near to them so that they will intercede for him, or cure his sick person, or fulfill his need, or seek their aid, and slaughtering for them for that purpose, this is shirk (associating partners with Allah), and it is not permissible; for this reason he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Allah cursed him who sacrificed for anyone besides Allahلعن الله من ذبح لغير الله
Sahih Muslim 1978b
.
So drawing near through slaughtered animals to the dead, so that they may intercede for the one who slaughtered, or to fulfill his need, or to cure his sick person, or to provide him with support that benefits him, or to protect his farm or his livestock, all of this is shirk (associating partners with Allah) with Allah . And some of the ignorant people do this, and this is major shirk. And likewise slaughtering for idols and for carved images in the likeness of some of the great ones, or for the jinn or for the stars or for the angels, drawing near to them, all of this is major shirk. And likewise making du'a' (supplication) to them, calling for aid from them, and making vows for them, all of this is major shirk. We seek refuge in Allah from that. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. She asks about giving charity on behalf of the deceased, is this permissible?

The Shaykh: If one slaughters for charity, there is nothing wrong with it. If one slaughters a sacrificial animal, or a person slaughters a sacrificial animal and gives it as charity on behalf of his father or his mother or his sisters, drawing near to Allah with it and hoping for its reward for this deceased person, there is nothing wrong with that. Or for a living person, likewise. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
