The Ruling on the Good Deeds of One Who Commits an Act of Apostasy and Then Repents

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener, Badriyah Jasim Muhammad, sent a message saying: I performed Hajj to the House of Allah last year, and after returning to my country, some problems occurred which led to me losing my temper, and this led me to utter foul words that amount to disbelief. I have repented greatly. Does my Hajj become invalid, or do I owe an expiation?
Please advise us. May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
You must repent to Allah, and whoever repents, Allah accepts his repentance. If a Muslim performs Hajj, prays, or fasts, and then commits apostasy, and then repents to Allah and returns, he remains upon the good he had done before, and his good deeds remain. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Hakim ibn Hizam when he embraced Islam, and he mentioned to him that he had previously freed slaves and given charity, he said:
You accepted Islam with all the previous virtues that you practised.أسلمت على ما أسلفت من خير
Sahih Muslim 123a
.
If a Muslim embraces Islam, Allah expiates for him the sins and acts of shirk (associating partners with Allah) that were upon him previously. And if his Islam is good, Allah expiates for him everything. It is obligatory for one who falls into a nullifier of Islam, such as insulting the religion, or denying what Allah has made obligatory, or making lawful what Allah has forbidden, to repent to Allah. And if he hastens with sincere repentance and reform and persists, then Allah, the Exalted, will erase from him what has passed of his sins, and forgive him what occurred from him, and his previous good deeds will remain as they are, not invalidated. His Hajj remains, and his fasting remains, and he does not owe another Hajj. This is what is prescribed, which Allah and His Messenger have clarified. Allah said: :
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful."
[Surah Az-Zumar: 53]. This is by the consensus of the Muslims regarding those who repent. This verse is about those who repent, so whoever repents, Allah accepts his repentance, and forgives him all his sins, with sincere repentance, with the repentance of the sincere, as he (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:
The one who repents from sin is like one who did not sin.التائب من الذنب كمن لا ذنب له
Sunan Ibn Majah 4250Da’if (Darussalam)
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Verily migration wipes out all the previous (misdeeds)التوبة تهدم ما كان قبلها
Sahih Muslim 121
Yes.
