Ruling on Carrying Amulets to Seek Benefit or Avert Harm

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This questioner is from Syria and resides in Saudi Arabia. He says: Some people carry amulets to enter upon officials and judges, on the pretext that these amulets benefit them in their affairs, so that their request is not rejected or they prevail over their opponent. What is the truth of this? May you be rewarded, and what is its ruling?

Answer:
This is invalid, it has no basis. This is invalid, it has no basis. So taking amulets is not permissible. They are called *haruz* (amulets), and they are called *tamimah* (amulets). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever hangs a tamimah, Allah will not complete for him, and whoever hangs a wada'ah, Allah will not grant him peace.من تعلق تميمة فلا أتم الله له، ومن تعلق ودعة فلا ودع الله له
And in another wording:
Whoever hangs up an amulet has committed shirk.من تعلق تميمة فقد أشرك
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
spells, charms and love-potions are polytheismإن الرقى والتمائم والتولة شرك
Sunan Abi Dawud 3883Sahih (Al-Albani)
.
So *ruqyah* (healing by recitation) that is not known is not permissible, but *ruqyah* that is based on the Shari'ah is permissible; because of his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
There is no harm in invocations so long as there is no polytheism in them.لا بأس بالرقى ما لم تكن شركًا
Sunan Abi Dawud 3886Sahih (Al-Albani)
And *tamimah* (amulets): they are *haruz* (amulets), and they are *hujub* (amulets), and they are not permissible, whether they are from the Qur'an, or from other than the Qur'an, or mixed; all of them are not permissible; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited them, warned against them, and informed that they are from *shirk* (associating partners with Allah), whether the one who takes them is a man or a woman. It is never permissible to take them. Rather, it is obligatory to disapprove of the one who does that. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah bless you.
