Sand Casting and Astrology
Question: How authentic are the two hadiths, from the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) when he said: .And another hadith, which is: Sunan Abi Dawud 3909Sahih (Al-Albani) .
and what is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding sand casting and astrology? Are there any hadiths from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that forbid these practices?
Answer: As for the issue of astrology, if by astrology one means using the stars to predict future events, and believing that the stars have an influence on living beings, on the falling of rain, or the occurrence of diseases, or otherwise, then this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah). It is a belief of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance. Astrology of this kind is forbidden to the utmost degree of prohibition. As for the hadith you asked about:, so I do not know of any basis for it in terms of its chain of narration, nor have I come across it. However, its meaning is correct, for astrologers guess and lie about Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He); because the stars have no connection to the management of the universe. The Manager is Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He). He is the One who created the stars, and created
other things,And the stars, Allah created them for three purposes: as adornment for the heavens, as missiles for the devils, and as signs by which people find their way. This is what the Noble Qur'an indicates. Whoever seeks from them anything other than this has erred and wasted his share. This is what concerns astrology and the stars.
Likewise, the rest of the matters that are superstitions and sorcery, such as sand casting, stealing sand, and other matters used to claim knowledge of the unseen, to report what will happen, or to cure diseases, or otherwise. All of this falls under the ruling of astrology, falls under fortune-telling, and falls under matters of shirk (associating partners with Allah); because hearts must be attached to Allah, their Creator and Manager, who possesses harm and benefit, good and evil, and in whose hand is good, and He is over all things capable. As for these beings and these creations, they are managed and created; they have no share in the command. [Fussilat: 37], [Al-A'raf: 54]. So they are all created beings that are managed. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has connected benefits to them, and they perform their functions in obedience to Allah, as a subjugation from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He).
As for attaching oneself to them and seeking from them the removal of harm or the bringing of good, this is major shirk (associating partners with Allah) and a belief of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance.
As for the hadith:Sunan Abi Dawud 3909Sahih (Al-Albani), so this is an authentic hadith, narrated by Imam Muslim and Imam Ahmad and others.
The scholars said: And its meaning is that this is specific to that Prophet (peace be upon him), and one of his miracles, and that no one can match him; because this is among his specific attributes and his miracles. The intent of this is to deny that any matter is connected to the lines in the sand; because this is among the specific attributes of that Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the specific attributes and miracles of the Prophets are not shared by others, may Allah's prayers and peace be upon them. So the intent of this is to deny that the line-makers or sand-casters have any of the truths they claim; rather, they are lies; because it is not possible for anyone to match that Prophet in his lines. And Allah knows best.
Question: Like the lines in the sand, or reading tea cups, or palm reading, as happens with some superstitious people today. Is the sin in this limited to the perpetrators of these acts, or does it extend to those who go to them or believe them?
Answer: There is no doubt that these are superstitions and illusions of the pre-Islamic age of ignorance and acts of shirk (associating partners with Allah). They are all works of Satan, and they are all paths of shirk and acts of shirk. It is not permissible for a Muslim who believes in Allah and the Last Day to go to these people, nor to believe them. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sunan al-Bayhaqi 15:741, so it is not permissible to go to them, nor to ask them, nor to believe them. And the believer must rely upon Allah, and place his trust in Allah, and be connected to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and beware of what corrupts his religion or weakens his creed, or misguides him from the straight path.
[Writing and Hanging Amulets and Talismans]
Question: We are in Sudan, and some people come to the mufti or the mutaww,So he says: saying, "Write for me a protection, or give me al-Fatihah, or write for me a talisman that will ease my affairs." Is this permissible? Please advise us, may Allah reward you?
Answer: It is obligatory for the Muslim to preserve his creed, the creed of tawhid (the oneness of Allah) that connects him to his Lord, which is the foundation of his religion and the basis of his happiness in this world and the Hereafter. He must preserve it from everything that affects it or scratches it, from words, actions, religious innovations, and superstitions, by placing his trust in Allah, seeking help from Allah, and attaching his hope to Allah, and not calling upon anyone other than Allah to bring good or remove harm. [Yunus: 107].
As for what the questioner mentioned, that he goes to the mutaww, or to the one he calls the mufti, and asks him to write for him al-Fatihah, or to write for him some of the amulets and talismans, this is not permissible; because it is attaching oneself to other than Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and because some of these amulets and talismans contain shirk (associating partners with Allah) if they include phrases of shirk, such as seeking help from the jinn or devils or unknown names, or if they contain broken letters. These talismans of this type are considered shirk with Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and it is not permissible to hang them or write them, by the consensus of the scholars.
As for if these amulets or these writings and talismans contain something from the Qur'an, the correct opinion of the scholars is also that it is not permissible to hang them; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
He said:Sunan Abi Dawud 3883Sahih (Al-Albani) ،And amulets: [refers to] the amulets and talismans that are hung to ward off evil or cure illness or the like. This is general for what is hung, even if it is from the Qur'an; because in that is the attachment of the heart to other than Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and because it is a means and opens the door to hanging things that are not permissible, and because in this is the humiliation of the Noble Qur'an. If the Qur'an is written in this form, in the shape of talismans, amulets, and charms, and becomes hung in these forms, on children and on those who do not guard against ritual impurity, or on those who enter filthy places, then this is subject to the humiliation of the Noble Qur'an.
In conclusion: It is obligatory for the Muslim to avoid all these matters. And what has been reported and whose hadiths are authentic is that one reads directly for the sick person, which is called ruqyah (healing by Qur'anic recitation) according to the Shari'ah.And they are: That the reader comes and reads for the sick person or on the site of the affliction. Or the sick person or the afflicted person reads for himself and on his body, and this is better and more complete. This is what has been reported.
As for writing writings and hanging amulets, talismans, and charms, this is not permissible for the Muslim to deal with. And those who write such talismans and amulets are not trustworthy regarding the creeds of the Muslims, nor are they trustworthy in what they write in these amulets and talismans. And perhaps most of them are ignorant, not distinguishing between the truth and falsehood. And perhaps some of them are misguiders who intend to mislead people and deceive them, to gain greed and earnings from people in these things, and to deceive people and rob them of their money.
So it is obligatory for the Muslim to be cautious, and for his attachment to be to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), and that he not engage in these matters from which the creed is not safe from their harm and evil. And Allah knows best.
