How to Maintain Family Ties When They Are Sinners

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A man has relatives who neglect performing the congregational prayer in the mosque and fall into many sins and wrongdoings. How can this man maintain his family ties with them while they are persisting in these forbidden acts? And how can he also be dutiful to his parents if they are in this state?

Answer:
The Sunnah for him is to maintain ties with them through wealth if they are poor, and to be kind to them. He must also advise them, guide them to good, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong; he should not remain silent, whether it is with his parents, or with his brothers, or maternal uncles, or paternal uncles, or others. It is obligatory for him to call them to Allah, advise them, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong with gentleness, kindness, and good manner; perhaps Allah will benefit through this; perhaps Allah will guide them through these means. If they are poor, he should support them and win their hearts with wealth if he has the ability to give them money. If he has zakah, he should give them from the zakah, provided they are not his parents or his children, but rather brothers, uncles, or the like.
The point is: he should win them over with wealth if they are not his parents or among his children. He should win them over with wealth and with kind words. If they are among his parents or among his children, he should use kind words and good manner. He should strive to call them to Allah, be gentle with them, advise them, and explain the badness of what they are doing. He should also seek the help of his other relatives, such as his brothers or uncles, so that they can assist him in this matter; perhaps Allah will guide these people through their means, because if he is alone, they may not respond to him. If he is with some of his relatives, perhaps they will respond. Otherwise, the call is beneficial. If they persist in the wrong and do not respond to him, he may boycott them, but he should do what is best as much as possible. Yes.
