The Ruling on Obeying One’s Parents in Not Maintaining Ties with Kin

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A male or female listener with the code (A. H. H. K.), or rather a young man, says: I am a young man, and praise be to Allah, committed to the religion of Allah the Exalted. I live with my family, consisting of my mother, my father, and my brothers. We have relatives in the same place where we are, but these relatives and my family are in a state of enmity and constant fighting, and none of them is pleased with the other. Knowing that these relatives have bad morals and their treatment of us is bad, I stand confused. If I go to them to maintain the ties of kinship that Allah has commanded to be maintained, my father and mother become angry. And if I do not go, in order to please my father and mother, I fear the punishment of severing the ties of kinship. So what do you advise me? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
If the relatives have apparent evils for which they deserve to be boycotted, then do not go to them. But if you go to them for advice and guidance toward good, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong, that is good, perhaps they will be guided. And if you do not inform your parents, then if you find that advice does not work and guidance has no effect on them, then at that time it is prescribed to boycott them because of their persistence in sin. And with that, you please your parents with this matter.
As for if you hope that Allah will benefit them through your advice and guidance, then go to them, advise them, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong, perhaps Allah will guide them thereby. Even if your parents are not pleased, but if it is possible to hide that from your parents, you combine between the two benefits, and that is good. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Obedience is in matters which are good and universally recognized.إنما الطاعة في المعروف
Sunan Abi Dawud 2625Sahih (Al-Albani)
So if you go to your relatives for advice and guidance, enjoining what is right, and forbidding what is wrong, this is a good and prescribed act, even if your parents are not pleased. But if it is possible to hide that from them, you combine between the two benefits: between pleasing your parents, and between doing what Allah has prescribed for you of advice and guidance. This is all good. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
