Ruling on a woman traveling for 'Umrah with her daughter's husband

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a letter from the questioner (M. S. al-Hajri) from al-Kharj, stating: A woman performed 'Umrah at the House of Allah the Sacred, and the mahram accompanying her was her daughter's husband. Is her 'Umrah valid, and is he considered a mahram for her, or not? What should she do if he is not a mahram for her? Does she have to repeat her 'Umrah, or is it valid even if it was obligatory?

Answer:
The daughter's husband is a mahram. The daughter's husband, the granddaughter's husband, and the son's daughter are mahrams. The mother's husband is a mahram, and the grandmother's husband is a mahram. They are all mahrams, and there is no blame in that. Her 'Umrah is valid if she fulfilled its rights and completed it, even if she was with someone who is not a mahram. If the one with her is not a mahram, such as her cousin or her sister's husband, her 'Umrah is valid and her Hajj is valid, but she has sinned by traveling without a mahram. She must repent to Allah. As for the 'Umrah, it is valid, and the Hajj is valid, even if she did not have a mahram with her. However, she has erred; it is not permissible for her to travel without a mahram, neither for Hajj nor for anything else. But if she did so because she thought it was permissible, or because some people issued a fatwa that it was permissible, and she performed Hajj without a mahram, or performed 'Umrah without a mahram, her 'Umrah is valid and her Hajj is valid, but she must repent to Allah, feel remorse, and not return to such an act. She is not allowed to travel after that except with a mahram; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A woman should not travel except with a mahramلا تسافر امرأة إلا مع ذي محرم
Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah 9:2565
This is what he (peace and blessings be upon him) said. Yes.
