How to Deal with the Surplus Food from Celebrations

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A message was sent by one of the listening brothers. The sender, (K. A. M.), says: “O His Eminence the Shaykh! I work in a kitchen and in a wedding palace. The problem I face with my colleagues is that at every wedding, sheep are usually slaughtered, ranging from ten to thirty depending on the request of the groom’s family. They are distributed entirely on trays and plates, but they are not all eaten, which forces us to put them in the trash. What do you advise us, as workers? And what do you advise people regarding this extravagance and waste that we see? May Allah reward you with good and do you well.”

Answer:
These surplus meats must be distributed among the poor. They should be distributed in the neighborhoods where there are poor people, or given to the associations that perform this duty. There are associations that do this. It is obligatory for you, and for the owner of the restaurant, it is obligatory for all of you to do what you can, either by distributing it to the poor or by handing it over to the entities that distribute it. It is not permissible to throw it in the trash. Rather, it should be preserved until it is handed over to the poor or to the charitable associations that distribute it among the poor. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good and do you well. Is there a word to the hosts of celebrations, Shaykh Abdulaziz?

The Shaykh: Yes, yes… We advise all hosts of celebrations, whether weddings or otherwise, to strive to deliver the surplus food to the poor and the needy. It is not permissible to throw it in the trash or in an inappropriate, despicable place. Rather, the food must be preserved in refrigerators until it is delivered to the poor and the needy. If it is absolutely necessary—meaning no poor people, no needy people, and no associations are found—it should be placed in a clean place, far from desecration, in the wilderness. Take it to the wilderness in a clean place, away from the roads, where wild animals, dogs, and birds can eat it, and no one desecrates it, if it is not possible to give it to the poor and the needy, or to associations… relief associations, the associations that distribute to the poor. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
