The Ruling on One Spouse Lying to the Other

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This sister, the questioner, Umm Muhammad from Dammam, says: Your Eminence, what is the ruling in the Shari'ah, in your view, regarding one spouse lying to the other if there is a benefit for this family?

Answer:
Umm Kulthum, the daughter of 'Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt (may Allah be pleased with her), says: Umm Kulthum (may Allah be pleased with her) said: “I did not hear the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permit lying in anything except in three cases: war, reconciliation between people, and a man speaking to his wife, and a woman speaking to her husband.” Muslim narrated it in the Sahih.
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted a man to lie to his wife, and a woman to lie to her husband, if there is reconciliation, if it does not harm anyone, but rather benefits and does not harm. If he lies to her for a benefit concerning her, or her family, or if she lies to him for a benefit concerning him, or his family, and it does not harm anyone; this is good, there is nothing wrong with it.
She says: Your family loves you, praises you, and loves for you to be truthful in your speech, and loves that you maintain the prayers in congregation, and loves that you are kind in your speech with them, of good disposition, and they praise your service to them, until you encourage them. Good.
And he says to her likewise: I will not marry over you, and I will strive in what benefits you, and I will bequeath to your family good regarding you, and the words that benefit her and please her. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and bless you.
