How to arrange Fajr with its Sunnah when waking up late
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A listener from Yemen says: If I am late for the Fajr prayer—meaning, after the sun has risen—should I pray the Sunnah first and then the obligatory prayer, or the obligatory prayer without the Sunnah?
Answer:
A person may sleep through the Fajr prayer. He should pray the voluntary prayer, which is two rak'ahs, and then the obligatory prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), on some of his journeys, was overcome by sleep, and they did not wake up until the sun had risen. When they woke up, they prayed it as they would have prayed it in its time. He ordered the adhan to be called, then he prayed the rawatib, and then he prayed the obligatory prayer, may peace and blessings be upon him.
So, if a woman or a man is overcome by sleep and does not wake up until after the sun has risen, he should pray it as he would have prayed it in its time: he prays the rawatib, and then he prays the obligatory prayer. However, it is not permissible to be lax in this matter. Rather, it is obligatory for the man and the woman to take the necessary measures: setting the clock for the time of prayer, or asking the household members to wake them up. They must not be lax in this. It is obligatory for the believer to be concerned with praying at its time, whether by having a clock set for the time, or by asking the household members to wake him up, and to wake the woman as well. Praying at its time is a necessary matter and an obligation, and it is not permissible to be lax in this. Being lax in this is one of the characteristics of the hypocrites. We ask Allah for safety from this.
