Question:
Our father (may Allah preserve him)! I hope to find with you a solution to my situation, for worry has taken a severe hold on me. I have lost khushu' (humility) in all my prayers, I have lost standing in night prayer, I have lost much of what I had memorized from the Book of Allah, and I have abandoned the da'wah (calling) in which I used to be active. I have lost many things because of excessive thinking about what has befallen me. In conclusion, I ask you, our father, to advise me and to make du'a' (supplication) for me, and may Allah preserve you.
The Shaykh: Repeat, repeat this last part.
The presenter: I hope to find with you a solution to my situation, for worry has taken a severe hold on me. I have lost khushu' (humility) in all my prayers, and I have lost much of what I had memorized from the Book of Allah...
Answer:
You must, my brother, ask your Lord (Exalted and Majestic is He) and be humble to Him, asking Allah to cure you of this affliction. You are in a good state if this is not by your choice, but rather you are overcome by this matter. So you ask your Lord to help you. Strive for khushu' (humility) in prayer and to turn to it with your heart. Realize that Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) is looking at you, and that He (Glorified and Exalted is He) is watching you, and that you are before Him. So be ashamed (of sin), and leave this thinking that has befallen you. The command of Allah is dominant, so praise Allah. Allah does not decree for His servant any decree except that it is good for him. So you must have patience, seek reward from Allah, have good opinion of Allah, turn to your prayer, have khushu' (humility) in it, call to Allah according to your ability among your family, your neighbors, and others, and attend to standing in night prayer according to your ability, in its beginning, or its middle, or its end: [Surat al-Taghabun: 16].
And beware of having a bad opinion of Allah. You must have a good opinion of Allah. Strive in asking and being humble to Him that He may grant you health, cure you, and return you to your previous state, which is better. May He grant you khushu' (humility) in prayer, attend to night prayer, and attend to calling to Allah. You are before Allah, you are a slave among His slaves. Be humble to Him and ask Him sincerely to help you, to grant you health, and to give you your previous state of calling to Allah, khushu' (humility), and turning to night prayer. And be glad of good, for Allah says, Glorified is He: [Surat Ghafir: 60]. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good, O Shaykh! It seems our brother is afflicted with two illnesses: a physical illness and a psychological illness. Do you advise him to visit one of the hospitals, perhaps Allah will prepare for him a cure?
The Shaykh: There is no harm if the illness is of a kind that doctors can treat, so there is no problem. As for the psychological matter, its treatment is the remembrance of Allah, obedience to Allah, asking Allah, and being humble to Him, that He may grant him his previous state of sincerity to Allah, khushu' (humility) before Him, standing in night prayer, and the like. The thing that relates to the physical body, something of the body, this is treated by specialized doctors, and praise be to Allah. Yes.
