How to Treat a Wife When She Is Defiant
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
She says—in one of her questions to Your Eminence, the Shaykh—if the husband does not treat his wife with kindness and gentleness, but rather with boycott and harsh criticism, and this happens in every disagreement where I do not agree with his opinion, is the boycott in Islam a boycott of everything, including household responsibilities? In addition to the bed, I mean: a boycott of speech, bad treatment, and a long period of boycott?
Answer:
It is obligatory for the husband, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: And Allah says: [Surat al-Nisa: 19].. And He, the Exalted, says: [Surat al-Baqarah: 228]. Boycott has its causes, as the Exalted said: [Surat al-Nisa: 34]. This boycott, if he fears her defiance or her disobedience to him, and the signs of that appear from her; then he has at that time what Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) mentioned, the first of which is: admonition, he reminds her and advises her, then after that—after the admonition—boycott, in that he does not sleep with her in the bed, he sleeps alone, or he turns his back to her, as a discipline for her, then beating after that, a light beating that does not cause harm, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, a light beating that does not cause harm, if the admonition and the boycott do not benefit. Yes.

Treat women with kindness
استوصوا بالنساء خيرًاAnd live with them in kindness
وَعَاشِرُوهُنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِAnd due to the wives is similar to what is expected of them, according to what is reasonable
وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ الَّذِي عَلَيْهِنَّ بِالْمَعْرُوفِBut those [wives] from whom you fear arrogance - [first] advise them; [then if they persist], forsake them in bed; and [finally], strike them
وَاللَّاتِي تَخَافُونَ نُشُوزَهُنَّ فَعِظُوهُنَّ وَاهْجُرُوهُنَّ فِي الْمَضَاجِعِ وَاضْرِبُوهُنَّ
