Question:
What is the ruling on a woman's marital defiance, and if boycotting her is of no benefit, does he divorce her?

Answer:
Answer: A woman's marital defiance is her rising above her husband, from the word for a high place in the earth. If she rises above him in her character and manners, or disobeys his commands, she has committed marital defiance. If she withholds her rights from him, this is marital defiance. (And as for those women from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them). This is the first thing to address, through admonition. Then boycott them in their beds. This is the second stage. It means turning away from them in the bed. It was said that he does not sleep with her, and it was said that he sleeps with her but does not turn toward her. (And strike them). This is the final remedy: striking that does not cause harm. The meaning is striking that does not cause harm. The husband strikes his wife if she commits marital defiance and refuses to grant him his rights over her. He may address her through these steps: admonition, boycotting in the bed, and finally striking, but it must be a strike that does not cause harm, one that does not break a bone or tear the skin, and through which discipline is achieved.
