Question:
The first message in this episode is from Sudan, sent by one of the female listeners, Hayat 'Abd al-Razzaq. She says: When one of our people passes away, we women embrace one another and cry at the top of our voices for ten minutes. The people bring out their secrets and spread carpets on the ground for three days. What is the ruling on this practice? May Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and whoever follows his guidance. As for what follows:
It is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 104a and : the one who raises her voice at the time of calamity, and : the one who shaves her hair at the time of calamity, and : the one who tears her garment at the time of calamity. So for each of you to raise her voice in wailing is an abomination; it is not permissible. It is obligatory for you to repent from that, to be cautious, and to advise the others among you regarding it.
As for mere crying without raising the voice, there is nothing wrong with it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wept for some of his daughters and some of his granddaughters; there is no blame in that. He said (peace and blessings be upon him):Sahih Muslim 924 and pointed to his tongue, may Allah’s peace and blessings be upon him.
When his son Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) died, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 1303 So there is no objection to sadness and weeping with tears in the eyes, but raising the voice is not permissible; raising the voice is not permissible. This wailing that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade—he said (peace and blessings be upon him): Sahih Muslim 927b So your wailing over your dead is among the causes of his torment. When the relatives of the deceased wail over him, this becomes among the causes of his torment. It is obligatory for you, and for others, to be cautious of that, and for the sadness to be without raising the voice in weeping; there is nothing wrong with that. Yes.
