Crying over the deceased

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 2177 )
Q2: Is it permissible to cry over the deceased if the crying involves wailing, slapping the cheeks, and tearing clothes? Does crying affect the deceased?
A2: It is not permissible to wail, to lament, to tear clothes, to slap the cheeks, or to do anything similar; because it is established in the two Sahihs from Ibn Mas'ud that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who slaps his cheeks, tears his clothes and follows the ways and traditions of the Days of Ignorance is not one of us.ليس منا من لطم الخدود وشق الجيوب ودعا بدعوى الجاهلية
Sahih al-Bukhari 1294
, and it is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he cursed the woman who wails and the one who listens to her, and it is also authentic from him that he said:
The dead is punished in the grave because of wailing on it.إن الميت يعذب في قبره بما يناح عليه
Sahih Muslim 927b
, and in another wording:
The dead person is tortured by the crying of his relatives.إن الميت ليعذب ببكاء أهله عليه
Sahih al-Bukhari 1286, 1287, 1288
, and the crying referred to here is wailing, whereas crying with tears in the eyes without wailing is not blameworthy; because of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when his son Ibrahim died:
The eyes are shedding tears and the heart is grieved, and we will not say except what pleases our Lord, O Ibrahim ! Indeed we are grieved by your separation.العين تدمع والقلب يحزن ولا نقول إلا ما يرضي الرب، وإنا بفراقك يا إبراهيم لمحزونون
Sahih al-Bukhari 1303
, and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
God does not punish for the tears the eye sheds or the grief the heart experiences, but He punishes for this (pointing to his tongue), or He shows compassionإن الله لا يعذب بدمع العين ولا بحزن القلب، وإنما يعذب بهذا أو يرحم، وأشار إلى لسانه
Mishkat al-Masabih 1724
(peace and blessings be upon him). And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
