The Ruling on the Zakah of Gold Intended for Adornment or Savings

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, Umm Nawaf from Riyadh, says: I have jewelry, part of which I wear and part of which I do not wear. Is zakah due on it, knowing that I have had this for several years?

Answer:
The correct ruling is that it is all subject to zakah; all of it is subject to zakah. This is the correct position. As for the past years, if you did not know, you owe nothing for them; you pay zakah for the future. However, if you knew, and you were issued a fatwa that zakah was due on you, but you were negligent and did not pay for the past, that is different. If you were ignorant, you pay zakah for the future, starting from the time you heard the fatwa now. You pay zakah for the current year and the years to come. This is the correct and stronger position, provided the nisab is reached and a lunar year has passed. The nisab is eleven pounds and three-sevenths of a pound, meaning approximately eleven and a half pounds. If the gold reaches this amount or more, it is subject to zakah.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, Your Eminence.
