Ruling on a son taking from his father's money without his knowledge

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, who used the initials (B. F. Q) from Riyadh, mentions that he is a young man whom Allah has blessed with guidance. He praises Allah for this blessing and asks, saying: "Your Eminence! In the past, I used to take large sums of money from my father's safe without his knowledge. My taking of it was continuous, and the amount is very large; I cannot return it to my father. I am afraid that if I inform him, he will be angry with me or lose the trust he placed in me. What is the ruling, Your Eminence, if I take from my father's money again to pay the rent for an apartment where I live for my studies? I am a student, and the university stipend is not enough to cover all my needs. I also know that if I ask my father, he will refuse and be angry with me."

Answer:
It is not permissible for you to take from your father's money without his knowledge. It is obligatory for you to ask him and seek his permission, unless you are eating in his house and he has been deficient in your maintenance. In that case, you may take what is needed, such as your clothing and food, if he has been deficient. As the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) permitted Hind, the wife of Abu Sufyan, to take from his wealth what is sufficient for her and her children in a reasonable manner. So, if you are dependent on his maintenance and in his house, and he has been deficient toward you, and you do not have the ability to complete your needs, you may take from his wealth in a reasonable manner what you need for clothing and the like. As for the amounts you took in excess of this, it is obligatory for you to return them, even without his knowledge. You must return them to his wealth, even without his knowledge. If you seek his permission, inform him, ask his forgiveness, and return them, there is no harm. And if you are afraid that he will be angry, return them to his wealth, even without his knowledge. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, Your Eminence, and bless you.
