Question:
After this, we move on to a message sent to the program from Riyadh, sent by one of the female listeners. She says: Your sister Umm Hajar. Umm Hajar has a message, and she included a collection of questions in it. In one of them, she says: I am a wife, and praise be to Allah, a Muslim woman who prays. I have a Muslim husband, and I ask Allah to reward him well for his kind treatment of me. I do not complain to you, O Shaykh, about anything regarding him, except that he works two shifts and returns late, around eleven at night. And because I am alone and I do not go out almost ever except on his day off, he stays up with me to alleviate the loneliness of being alone. And when I wake up in the Fajr time to pray, I wake him up, but his sleep is heavy. He asked me to splash water on his face so that he would wake up, but sometimes he does not wake up as a result of that staying up late. So, is there a sin on me? And is there a sin on me for failing to wake him up? And is there anything other than water to wake him up? Guide us, and guide that man, may Allah reward you with good.
Answer:
You are rewarded, may Allah reward you with good for your work. This is a good deed, and this is from cooperating in righteousness and piety. There is nothing on you, and nothing on him, if he was overcome by the situation, and it was not by his choice, and he did not intentionally be lax in leaving the prayer at that time. When you splashed water on his face, splashing the face with water came by the text from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sprinkling water, sprinkling the husband with water, and waking him up with water; this came by the text. So you are rewarded, and he is rewarded when he ordered you to do that and allowed it. And you are both on the right path, if Allah wills.
But he is advised to leave one of the shifts. He should resign from one of the shifts, ask his employer to excuse him from one of the shifts, so that he does not tire himself, and does not make things difficult for himself, and for his family, and so that he does not lose the prayer. [Al-Talaq:2], Allah will provide for him, if Allah wills, what will suffice him instead of the second shift, so that he can rest, and let his family rest, and preserve what Allah has made obligatory upon him. Because a person’s capacity is limited, he should not burden himself with two shifts, as long as he is in this state. It makes things difficult for himself, and for his family, and perhaps he will leave the prayer in congregation because of that, even if it is not intentional and by choice, but he will be the cause of this thing.
So what we advise him in this is to leave one of the shifts so that he can devote himself to comforting his family, and the rest of his self and body, and the rest of his heart, and so that he can preserve the prayers with the congregation at their times. There is great good in this.
As for if his leaving the standing for prayer is due to being overcome by sleep, and he did not intend that, and he did not be lax in it, but he was overcome sometimes, then that does not harm him, if he was overcome sometimes. But I fear for him that there is a type of greed in the appearance of the two shifts, and eagerness for money, and that will harm him. Because it causes him these problems, with his family, and in the prayer. He is required to comfort his family, and to strive in being kind to them, and in being kind in their companionship, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Nisa:19], and by taking the means that help him in the prayer in congregation, and performing it with his brothers. So I fear that this second shift, that there will be a responsibility on him regarding it, if he is not in dire necessity for it. We ask Allah for guidance for everyone.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
