Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The hadith:
Whoever moves to the desert has been harshمَنْ بَدا فقد جَفا
Is it authentic?

Answer:
I do not recall its status, and I am inclined to think that there is nothing wrong with it, but I have not dealt with its chain of narration recently.
Q: But is its meaning correct?
A: It is one of the causes of harshness. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade moving to the desert after the migration, but if there is a need, there is nothing wrong with it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in an authentic hadith when he was asked:
"Who is the best among men?" He (ﷺ) replied, "A believer who strives in the way of Allah with his wealth and life." The man asked again, "Who is next to him (in excellence)?" He (ﷺ) said, "Next to him is a man who is engaged in worshipping his Rubb in a mountain valley, leaving the people secure from his mischief."أي الناس أفضل؟ قال: مؤمن مجاهد في سبيل الله، قيل: ثم أي؟ قال: مؤمنٌ في شعب من الشِّعاب يعبد الله ويدع الناسَ من شره
Riyad as-Salihin 1289
. The scholars understood this to apply during times of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) and when evil is present in cities and villages.
Q: Until our time?
A: No, it is not a general rule in all cases. There are places where one can worship his Lord without needing the desert.
