The ruling on a son maintaining ties with his father who neglected him in childhood and adulthood

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Our brother asks about the ruling in the Shari'ah regarding a person whose father did not raise him—as he said—and did not give him any kind of care, even during his childhood, despite the father's ability to provide for the son. Is it obligatory in that case for there to be ties between the father and his son? May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
Yes, it is obligatory for the son to be dutiful to his father, to recognize his rights, and to treat him with kindness, even if the father was bad to him or fell short. The father must repent to Allah for his shortcoming; he must repent to Allah for his shortcoming in the rights of his son and his upbringing. However, this does not justify the son being undutiful to his parents. Rather, it is obligatory for the son to be dutiful to his parents, even if they fell short in his rights. Allah said regarding the disbelievers in the story of Luqman:
but accompany them in [this] world with appropriate kindnessوَصَاحِبْهُمَا فِي الدُّنْيَا مَعْرُوفًا
[Luqman:15] even if they were disbelievers.
Therefore, it is obligatory for the son to treat his parents with kindness, be dutiful to them, be gentle with them, and deal with them in a good and beautiful manner, even if they fell short in his rights. Yes.

The presenter : May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
