The questioner : Your Eminence, what is the ruling on a man who married with forbidden money and lived in a house bought with forbidden money, and the wife has not yet borne him children? What is the ruling in this case? May you be rewarded.
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, his Companions, and those who follow them in excellence until the Day of Judgment. First, a person must purify his food, drink, and sustenance, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Indeed, Allah is Pure and accepts nothing but that which is pure, and Allah has commanded the believers with what He commanded the messengers, saying: “O messengers, eat from the good things and do righteous deeds. Indeed, I am, of what you do, Knowing.” And He said: “O you who have believed, eat from the good things We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is Him you worship.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a man who travels a long distance, disheveled and covered in dust, stretching his hands to the sky: “O Lord, O Lord,” while his food is forbidden, his clothing is forbidden, and he is nourished with what is forbidden. How then will his supplication be answered? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) considered it unlikely that the supplication of such a man would be answered because his food is forbidden, his clothing is forbidden, and he is nourished with what is forbidden. This is what I advise my brothers to do: stay away from consuming what is forbidden, whether it comes through riba (usury or interest), or through gambling, or through many other things of this kind that people fall into without realizing it, or they realize it but are negligent. This is my first advice: that a person purify his food, his clothing, and his dwelling.
As for the second point, which is the answer to this question: We say that as for the marriage, it is valid, and as for the purchase of the house, it is valid. The meaning of valid is that the contract is not invalid. Likewise, what he eats and drinks—meaning the sale contract for food and drink—is valid, but he has sinned. As for the wife, she is lawful for him; we do not say that the wife is forbidden to him because the contract is valid. As for the house, it is also permissible for him to live in it, but—yes—he must repent to Allah (Mighty and Majestic) for this. If he has the ability, he should give in charity the money he acquired through forbidden means, if he knew it was forbidden when he acquired it. But if he was ignorant, Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Baqarah 2:275] I ask Allah the Exalted to help him with sincere repentance from consuming what is forbidden.
The questioner : O Allah, accept our supplication. May Allah reward you and bless you. This questioner says: O Your Eminence.
