Wedding Halls and Exaggeration in Them

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We complain about wedding halls and the exaggeration in them, especially since many people have made it a custom, and they make it a condition for their daughter's marriage that it be in such-and-such a hall... This burdens the groom. We ask for guidance.

A: There is no doubt that the Sunnah is to avoid extravagance in mahr (bridal gifts) and wedding feasts in order to facilitate the marriage of young men and women, and that the families of the husband and the wife should advise each other to abandon extravagance and keep mahr low, to encourage young people to marry. There is no doubt that wedding halls are what burden the husband and wife in some cases, and likewise the feasts, which also make things difficult for them. So, what is prescribed for everyone is to avoid extravagance in all of this. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The best mahr is the easiest, and the best of them are the least burdensome.خير الصداق أيسره، وخيرهن أقلهن مؤنة
So, what is prescribed for everyone is to strive to follow the Sunnah. The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said to 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf:
Hold a feast, even if it is only with a sheepأولم ولو بشاة
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) held a wedding feast for Zaynab with bread and meat, and invited people to his feast.
The point is: that the type of wedding feast is prescribed in marriage, but the Muslim should avoid extravagance by preparing a large amount of food that leads to it being thrown into the trash and unwanted places, and prevents the poor and needy from having it. If they are content with their halls and do not expand in inviting people, the matter is better in this regard; because the important thing is announcing the marriage, and holding a feast, even if it is with just one sheep or two, and inviting some relatives, and not expanding in that is more comfortable for everyone.
