The Shaykh’s advice to the guardians of daughters not to be excessive in bridal gifts

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : ... We mention, on the occasion of this hadith, two matters. The first matter is that it is obligatory for the fathers of daughters or the guardians of daughters to facilitate the process of marriage. One of the first things in this is not to be excessive in the bridal gifts, for being excessive in the bridal gifts is one of the strong causes that leads young men to turn away from early marriage. This early marriage is a cause for protecting one’s chastity, as was mentioned previously in the preceding hadith. So they should not be excessive in the bridal gifts, because being excessive is one of the causes that entangles both sexes in committing the great sin, or at least in its preliminaries, as we mentioned earlier from his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
It has been decreed for the son of Adam his share of unlawful sexual intercourse, and it will overtake him inevitably. The eye commits unlawful sexual intercourse... كتب على ابن آدم حظه من الزنى فهو مدركه لا محالة فالعين تزني ...
to the end of the hadith. That is, these are preliminaries that may lead their owner to the greatest goal and the greatest sin, which is unlawful sexual intercourse. For this reason, the poet of Egypt in his time, who was Shawqi, took this beautiful Prophetic meaning, and this is a natural and observed matter:
A glance, then a smile, then a greeting, then conversation, then an appointment, then a meeting
So, in order to prevent this final outcome, which is the meeting, i.e., the greatest sin as mentioned in the hadith, marriage is necessary. Consequently, the means of marriage must be facilitated, and one of the first things is making the bridal gift easy and not being excessive in it. This is part of the blessing of the woman when her bridal gift is modest and easy. The requirements of this are not hidden from you, such as not stipulating an abundance of bedding, carpets, and the like.
