The ruling on one who disobeys, repents, then returns to disobedience
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the remedy for one who disobeys, repents, then returns to disobedience?
A: It is necessary to strive against the self in adhering to the truth and persisting in repentance; for the self requires striving. Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: [Al-'Ankabut:6] And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) says: [Al-'Ankabut:69] The meaning of His (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: is: strive against your selves, strive against the disbelievers, strive against the hypocrites, strive against the sinners, and strive against Satan. Thus, the verse is general and encompasses all types of jihad, including the jihad of the self; for He (Glorified and Exalted is He) omitted the object and did not specify it in the verse, so that it would encompass all types of jihad. Therefore, the self requires upbringing, care, patience, and striving, as the poet says:
And the self is only where the young man places it
If he indulges it, it yearns; otherwise, it is content
And the other says:
And the self desires if you desire it
And if you turn it to little, it is satisfied
And the other said:
And the self is like a child; if you neglect it, it grows up
Loving breastfeeding, and if you wean it, it is weaned
These are three good verses that correspond to the states of the self. So the resolute believer is the one who strives against his self for the sake of Allah until he is upright on the path and stands at the limits, and thereby Allah guides him to His straight path and His straight road, and the believer thereby becomes one of the muhsinun (those who excel in worship), about whom He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said: [Al-'Ankabut: 69] And He (Glorified and Exalted is He) said about them: : [An-Nahl: 128]; and success is from Allah.

And whoever strives only strives for [the benefit of] himself
وَمَنْ جَاهَدَ فَإِنَّمَا يُجَاهِدُ لِنَفْسِهِAnd those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways. And indeed, Allah is with the doers of good.

إِنَّ اللَّهَ مَعَ الَّذِينَ اتَّقَوْا وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ مُحْسِنُونَ
