The ruling on one who repents from a sin and then returns to it

Question:
If a servant repents from a sin he committed, and after a period of time returns to it, then repents again, but also after a period of time following the repentance returns to the sin, what is the ruling on that? And what do you advise him?

Answer:
If he repents from the sin, Allah wipes out the sin from him. If he repents sincerely, the sin is erased by the repentance. So repentance wipes out what came before it. And if he returns to it anew, the sin becomes anew upon the new sin. As for the first one from which he repented with a sincere repentance, it has been wiped out from him. So every repentance erases what came before it, and what remains upon him is the new one.
So he should pay attention to repentance, adhere to it, and strive for his safety from sins. As for repentance, it wipes out what came before it, so he is not held accountable for the first sin if he repented from it with a sincere repentance.
