How was the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) bewitched?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: How can the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) be bewitched when Allah says to him:
And Allah will protect you from the peopleوَاللَّهُ يَعْصِمُكَ مِنَ النَّاسِ
[Al-Ma'idah: 67]? And how can he be bewitched when he receives revelation from his Lord and conveys it to the Muslims? How can he convey it while being bewitched? And what about the statement of the disbelievers and polytheists:
You follow not but a man affected by magic."إِنْ تَتَّبِعُونَ إِلا رَجُلًا مَسْحُورًا
[Al-Isra: 47]? We ask for clarification and an explanation of these doubts.

A: It is established in authentic hadith that this occurred in Madinah, when the revelation had settled and the message had been established, when the proofs of prophethood and the truth of the message had become apparent, and when Allah had granted victory to His Prophet over the polytheists and humiliated them. A man from the Jews, named Labid ibn al-'A'sam, performed sorcery for him using a comb and a place of combing, and the skin of a date palm flower. It became such that it was imagined to him that he had done some things with his wives, though he had not done them. However, by the praise of Allah the Exalted, his mind, consciousness, and discernment remained with him in what he communicated to people, and he spoke to people with the truth that Allah had revealed to him. But he felt something that affected him somewhat with his wives, as Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: It was imagined to him that he had done some things in the house with his wives, though he had not done them. So revelation came to him from his Lord (Glorified and Exalted is He) through Jibril (peace be upon him), informing him of what had happened. He sent someone to extract that thing from a well belonging to one of the Ansar, and he destroyed it, and by the praise of Allah the Exalted, that effect was removed from him. And He sent down to him the two chapters of protection (al-Mu'awwidhatan), and he recited them, and all affliction was removed from him. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
There is nothing like them for seeking protectionما تعوذ المتعوذون بمثلهما
.
Nothing resulted from this that would harm people or disrupt the message or the revelation. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) protected him from people in a way that prevented the message from being blocked or its delivery being hindered. As for the types of affliction that befall the messengers, he (peace and blessings be upon him) was not protected from them; rather, some of that befell him. He was wounded on the Day of Uhud, his helmet was broken on his head, some rings of the helmet entered his cheeks, and he fell into some of the pits that were there. They severely restricted him in Makkah. So he was afflicted with some of what had befallen the messengers before him, and what Allah had decreed for him. And Allah raised his ranks thereby, elevated his status, and multiplied his good deeds. But Allah protected him from them, so they were unable to kill him or prevent him from conveying the message, and they did not stand between him and what is obligatory upon him of conveying it. He conveyed the message and fulfilled the trust (peace and blessings be upon him).
