This questioner (A. K. Q.) from Jordan says: A man is married, and I have six children and one daughter. I wish to set a limit on having children now, as I do not wish to have more children, knowing that my financial income is limited. What is the ruling of the Shari'ah in your view on this matter, and is it permissible for me to regulate childbearing? May Allah reward you with good, O honorable Shaykh!
Answer: It is prescribed not to set a limit; because the Lawgiver desires an increase in offspring and the multiplication of the Ummah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in the authentic hadith:Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:869 So what is prescribed for you, my brother, is not to set a limit, but to be patient, and to desire more. Ask your Lord for their well-being, for perhaps Allah will benefit you through them. You are in a great good by improving their upbringing and taking care of them, and asking Allah for their well-being, and that is better for you than setting a limit. Yes.
