The Harms of the Secret Habit and Its Ruling

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
He has a second inquiry, saying: If a single man releases his semen with himself, is this considered unlawful sexual intercourse, and what is the ruling on it?
Answer: This is called by some people: the secret habit, and it is called: self-stimulation. The majority of scholars hold that it is forbidden, and this is the correct position; because Allah, Mighty and Majestic, when He mentioned the believers and their attributes, said:
(5) And they who guard their private parts (6) Except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for indeed, they will not be blamed - (7) But whoever seeks beyond that, then those are the transgressors -وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ ۝ إِلَّا عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ ۝ فَمَنِ ابْتَغَى وَرَاءَ ذَلِكَ فَأُوْلَئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ
[Al-Mu’minun: 5-7]. The one who commits this is the wrongdoer who transgresses the limits of Allah. So He, Glorified is He, informed that whoever goes beyond intercourse with his wife and intercourse with the private part is a wrongdoer. There is no doubt that self-stimulation is outside of that. For this reason, the scholars derived from this noble verse the prohibition of this secret habit, which is self-stimulation by hand, meaning: releasing the semen by hand when the desire moves. It is not permissible for him to do this act. It has many harms, as the doctors have said. Some of the scholars have authored a book in which he collected the harms of this secret habit. You, O questioner, should beware of it and stay away from this habit, for it has countless harms. And because it is a habit that contradicts the apparent meaning of the Book of the Mighty Allah and contradicts what Allah has made permissible for His servants, it is obligatory to avoid it and beware of it. It is recommended for the one whose desire is intense and who fears for himself to hasten to marriage and rush to marriage. If that is not facilitated, let him fast. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Young man, those of you who can support a wife should marry, for it keeps you from looking at strange women and preserves you from immorality; but those who cannot should devote themselves to fastingيا معشر الشباب! من استطاع منكم الباءة فليتزوج، فإنه أغض للبصر وأحصن للفرج، ومن لم يستطع فعليه بالصوم
Mishkat al-Masabih 3080
— and he did not say, "And whoever cannot do it, let him release it by hand" or "let him stimulate himself," but rather he said —
and whoever cannot then he should fast, for it will be a restraint (wija') for him.ومن لم يستطع فعليه بالصوم فإنه له وجاء
Sunan an-Nasa'i 3208Sahih (Darussalam)
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned two things:
The first: hastening to marriage for the one who is able.
The second: seeking help through fasting for the one who is unable to marry; because fasting weakens the pathways of Satan, and Satan flows through the son of Adam as blood flows. The fasting person, by reason of his abstention from food and drink, narrows the pathways of Satan. You, O servant of Allah, should conduct yourself with the prescribed etiquettes, and strive to protect your chastity through lawful marriage, even if by borrowing and taking loans. For Allah will repay you on your behalf . For marriage is a righteous deed, and its doer is among those who are helped. The hadith is:
Three are those to whom Allah owes help — among them — the one who marries seeking chastity.ثلاثة حق على الله عونهم -ذكر منهم- المتزوج يريد العفاف
So hasten to marriage, even by borrowing and taking loans, and may Allah, Mighty and Majestic, repay you on your behalf. Whoever takes the money of people intending to repay it, Allah will repay it for him. And beware of this ugly habit, and beware of all indecencies, for the greatest of them is unlawful sexual intercourse, for it is among the major sins. The one who is lax in marriage may find that it leads him to unlawful sexual intercourse or to the forbidden self-stimulation. You, O servant of Allah, should beware of the causes of evil and stay away from its means, and strive to hasten to lawful marriage if you are able. And be glad of help from Allah and facilitation. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
