The Ruling on Praying While Holding in Wind
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The question: She has a third inquiry as well, which is the last in her letter. She says in it: I sometimes pray while holding in wind. Is my prayer valid?
The answer: It is obligatory for the believer, if wind, urine, or feces occupy him in a way that causes him distress, that he does not enter into prayer. Rather, he should relieve himself of feces, urine, and wind, then perform wudu' and pray with a tranquil heart, humble limbs, humble heart, and focused on his prayer. This is what is befitting for the believer. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih Muslim 560a meaning: urine and feces. Wind is in the same sense as that, for when it becomes severe, it is in the sense of urine and feces in its annoyance to the one praying and in occupying his thoughts. So what is prescribed for you, if you feel severe wind, is to relieve yourself of it, perform wudu', and then pray. It is not befitting for you to pray while it is with you, severe, and you are holding it in; because this is contrary to what Allah has prescribed. It is of the same kind as holding in urine and feces. The scholars differed regarding the validity of the prayer while holding in. Some said: The prayer is valid, and the meaning is: there is no complete prayer. Others said: Rather, the prayer is invalid; because the original principle is the negation of the reality. His saying: Sahih Muslim 560a its apparent meaning is the negation of the reality. You should beware of this matter and strive to complete your prayer and be cautious with it by relieving yourself of wind, urine, and feces before the prayer, so that you pray while you are humble and tranquil.
As for whether the prayer is valid or not valid, this is a matter of consideration. The closest view, if Allah wills, is validity, if the one praying understood his prayer and completed it as Allah has prescribed. However, he did something that is not befitting. That he prays while holding in feces, urine, or wind is contrary to what Allah has prescribed. The least of its states is that it is disliked, even though the apparent meaning of the text is the prohibition of that. But the believer should relieve himself of this, act according to the text, and distance himself from the doubt of the invalidity of his prayer. Yes.
