The Ruling on Walking on a Road Where Intoxicants Are Sold

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message from Mu'ayyid Muhammad al-Husayni from Mosul in Iraq. The brother Mu'ayyid says in his message: What do you advise a person who walks on a road that has shops selling intoxicants on both sides? Is he required to change his route, and does he sin if he walks near them? Please inform us; may Allah reward you.
The answer: This requires a detailed explanation: If there is another way available to him, he should take that other way so that he does not fall into difficulty, unless he is able to denounce this evil and call them to Allah . In that case, let him do so, because denouncing evil is one of the most important matters and is obligatory. If he is able to denounce the evil and call to Allah while taking that path, let him do so. However, if he is not able to do so, he should take other paths so that he does not fall into problems on this path, and so that he is not tested by someone who advises him to drink intoxicants or invites him to drink intoxicants.
The point is: He should avoid this road and take another road if that is feasible, unless he is able to denounce the evil. In that case, he denounces the evil and calls to Allah with wisdom and good speech, and he makes it clear to people that drinking intoxicants is among the forbidden things and among the major sins, and that there is severe warning against it, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
no drunkard who drinks wine is a believer as long as he drinks itلا يشرب الخمر حين يشربها وهو مؤمن
Sahih Muslim 57a
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The fornicator who fornicates is not a believer so long as he commits it and no thief who steals is a believer as long as he commits theft, and no drunkard who drinks wine is a believer as long as he drinks it.لا يزني الزاني حين يزني وهو مؤمن، ولا يسرق السارق حين يسرق وهو مؤمن، ولا يشرب الخمر حين يشربها وهو مؤمن
Sahih Muslim 57a
Meaning: He would be deficient in faith, weak in faith; if his faith had been complete, he would not have done it.
This indicates the weakness of his faith and the scantiness of his faith, and for this reason he proceeded to these sins. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him):
He cursed intoxicants, its drinker, its presser, its one who presses it, its carrier, the one to whom it is carried, its seller, its buyer, and the one who eats its price.أنه لعن الخمر وشاربها وعاصرها ومعتصرها، وحاملها والمحمولة إليه، وبائعها ومشتريها، وآكل ثمنها
They are evil, and they are the mother of all evils. It is also established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Allah has a covenant with the one who dies while drinking intoxicants that Allah will make him drink from the mud of the people of the Hellfire. It was said: O Messenger of Allah, what is the mud of the people of the Hellfire? He said: The juice of the people of the Hellfire, or he said: The sweat of the people of the Hellfire.إن على الله عهداً لمن مات وهو يشرب الخمر أن يسقيه الله من طينة الخبال، قيل: يا رسول الله! وما طينة الخبال؟ قال: عصارة أهل النار أو قال: عرق أهل النار
We ask Allah for safety.
So the evil of intoxicants is great. You must stay away from them and from their people as much as you can, unless you are one who denounces them, guides them, calls them to good, and is patient with their harm. In that case, there is no harm. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you.
