The Nisab Amount for Zakat on Jewelry and Paper Currency
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
We return at the beginning of this episode to the message from listener (H. M. N) from al-Dawadimi. We presented some of his questions, and he has others remaining as well. In one of his remaining questions, he asks: How is zakat paid on the gold and silver that women wear? And what is the nisab for paper currency?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for the correct opinion among the scholars regarding jewelry: it is subject to zakat even if it is used. Therefore, women must pay zakat on their gold and silver jewelry if it reaches the nisab. This is the correct opinion due to the generality of the evidence, and other specific evidence indicating the obligation of zakat on it when it reaches the nisab. The nisab for gold is eleven and a half Saudi pounds, meaning twenty mithqals. The amount of that in grams is ninety-two grams.
As for silver, its nisab is one hundred and forty mithqals, which was two hundred dirhams in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In our time now, it is fifty-six Saudi Riyals in silver, or the equivalent in paper currency. The equivalent of fifty-six silver Riyals in paper currency, such as the dollar, the Saudi Riyal, the dinar, and other currencies. If it reaches fifty-six in value, or fifty-six silver Riyals, or eleven and a half Saudi pounds, you pay zakat.
The obligatory amount is one-quarter of a tenth, and the zakat is upon the woman. If her husband pays it on her behalf with her consent, or her father, or someone else, there is no harm. Otherwise, the zakat is obligatory upon her because she is the owner. Anything less than this is not subject to zakat. Anything less than eleven and a half Saudi pounds of gold, or less than fifty-six silver Riyals of silver, has no zakat. Likewise, the equivalent in currency: if it is less than the value of eleven and a half Saudi pounds of gold, and its value is less than fifty-six silver Riyals, there is no zakat on it. Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
