Ruling on the prayer and fasting of a woman who does not wear the hijab
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
A letter reached the program from Iraq, sent by one of the female listeners, saying: (M. N.) At the beginning of her letter, she says: I am a Muslim citizen of the sisterly Iraqi country, I am still not wearing the hijab, but my clothing is modest, and I am an employee in one of the institutions, and I mix with men, my colleagues at work and citizens who have interests that require meeting them in our institution.
And I, praise be to Allah, perform the obligatory prayer, and I fast the month of Ramadan for only about seven months; I was not among those who prayed previously.
I ask you to inform me, may Allah preserve you: Is my work—meaning the prayer and fasting—valid without the hijab?
Knowing that I intend to wear the Islamic hijab in the near future.
Answer:
Praise be to Allah who has granted you repentance, and you have started praying; this is the greatest of blessings; because abandoning the prayer is major shirk (associating partners with Allah), we ask Allah for safety from it. So we advise you to remain steadfast upon the truth, to adhere to what Allah has made obligatory upon you, and to abandon what Allah has forbidden upon you, and among that is the hijab, for it is obligatory for the woman to cover herself from the men. Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Ahzab: 53]. So the hijab is purer for your heart and the hearts of the men. So we advise you to adhere to the hijab, and to beware of mixing with the men, and that your work be with women, or in a separate place where you are alone without the men, and do not mix with the men; for that is among the causes of fitnah (trial, discord or temptation). And you must repent from what has passed, and whoever repents, Allah accepts his repentance. Repentance is regret for the past, abandoning the sin, and resolving not to return to it with a sincere resolve, with the intention of sincerity for Allah, and loving Him and magnifying Him.
And the good deeds you have done are valid, from prayer and fasting; not wearing the hijab does not invalidate the deeds, but it is a sin. So you must repent to Allah from that, and be steadfast in wearing the hijab on the road, and in the presence of men wherever you are. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: : [Al-Ahzab: 59]. And He, the Exalted, said: [Al-Nur: 31]. And "what appears of it" is the outer clothing like the abaya and the jilbab (outer garment) and the like. [Al-Nur: 31]. And the "juyub" (collars) is the opening for the head, and the meaning is: she throws the jilbab over her head and face and chest so that nothing of her is apparent to the men. Then He, the Exalted, confirmed: [Al-Nur: 31]. And "al-bu'ulat" (husbands): [Al-Nur: 31] the verse.
So you must fear Allah in this matter, and beware of being lax in the matter of the hijab. May Allah grant us and you steadfastness and guidance.
The presenter: O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good.

And when you ask [his wives] for something, ask them from behind a partition. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts.
And the good deeds you have done are valid, from prayer and fasting; not wearing the hijab does not invalidate the deeds, but it is a sin. O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
And tell the believing women to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts and not expose their adornment except that which [necessarily] appears thereof
وَقُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَيَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوجَهُنَّ وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَاto wrap [a portion of] their headcovers over their chests
وَلْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلَى جُيُوبِهِنَّnot expose their adornment except to their husbands
وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّexcept to their husbands, their fathers, their husbands' fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers, their brothers' sons, their sisters' sons, their women
وَلا يُبْدِينَ زِينَتَهُنَّ إِلَّا لِبُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَائِهِنَّ أَوْ آبَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَائِهِنَّ أَوْ أَبْنَاءِ بُعُولَتِهِنَّ أَوْ إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي إِخْوَانِهِنَّ أَوْ بَنِي أَخَوَاتِهِنَّ أَوْ نِسَائِهِنَّ ..So you must fear Allah in this matter, and beware of being lax in the matter of the hijab.
