The Ruling on Reciting al-Fatihah by the Ma'mum in the Audible Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener, 'Atiyyah 'Abd al-'Aziz 'Abdullah, sent a question asking about the ruling on reciting al-Fatihah for the ma'mum (one praying behind the imam), stating:
He heard a hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saying:
There is no prayer without the opening of the Book.لا صلاة إلا بفاتحة الكتاب
So when the imam finishes reciting al-Fatihah in the loud prayers, do we recite al-Fatihah? And if we recite al-Fatihah and he begins the surah, do we complete reciting al-Fatihah, or how do we act?
May Allah reward you with good.

Answer:
You must recite al-Fatihah and make an effort; because the correct view is that it is obligatory for the ma'mum. And if he begins reciting, you complete it even if he has begun, then you listen to your imam's recitation. In the quiet prayers, you recite al-Fatihah and whatever is easy with it; due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Perhaps you recite behind your imam?لعلكم تقرؤون خلف إمامكم؟
Sunan Abi Dawud 823Da'if (Al-Albani)
We said: Yes. He said:
Do not do so except when it is Fatihat al-Kitab, for he who does not recite it is not credited with having prayed.لا تفعلوا إلا بفاتحة الكتاب؛ فإنه لا صلاة لمن لم يقرأ بها
Sunan Abi Dawud 823Da'if (Al-Albani)
So you combine the two: you listen to your imam's recitation, and you recite al-Fatihah even if he is reciting, provided he has not paused for a pause that is sufficient. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
