The Ruling on Reading Coffee Cups, Palms, and Wadi'

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The owner of the wadi', the coffee cup reader, the messengers, and palm reading tell us: Is it forbidden or permissible?

Answer:
All of this is religious innovation, all of it is denounced, and it has no validity. The coffee cup reader, palm reading, and throwing the wadi', or striking the wadi', or using pebbles, all of it is engaging in the knowledge of the unseen, and it is all invalid, all of it is denounced and has no validity. Rather, it is deception, lying, and fabrication. They claim knowledge of the unseen through other things besides this, which is a lie. They rely only on what their jinn companions tell them. Some of them use the jinn and say what the jinn tell them. They tell the truth and they lie. They tell the truth in some matters that they have seen in some countries, or that they have eavesdropped on, and they lie in most cases, and the majority of them lie. They deceive people until they take their money unjustly. And so do the humans who serve them; they may also lie and fabricate, saying "this is so" and "that is so," and they are liars. They only eat the money of people unjustly. And the knowledge of the unseen is known only to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) .
As for the word "messengers," I do not know what he means by "messengers." The word "messengers" is a general term. If the intention is reading the Qur'an that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) brought, reading it and reflecting on what is in it, hoping to find something to help in treating the patient, meaning reflecting on the Qur'an hoping to find something to help in treating the patient by reciting a verse over the patient, or something similar, then this does not need this talk. The Qur'an is a healing. If one reads from some of the verses, Ayat al-Kursi, or al-Fatihah, or
Say, "He is Allah, [who is] One,قُل هُو اللّهُ أَحْدٌ
[Surah al-Ikhlas:1] or the two Mu'awwidhat, that is good, and these are among the causes of healing. So as for naming them "messengers," I do not know what he means.

The presenter: Regarding the messengers—may Allah bless you—he says: It is reported that there, when someone comes who wants to benefit from the wadi' owner or the coffee cup reader, and so on, they send a messenger to inform about this person, to inform his family and relatives that he is well.

The Shaykh: This talk has no connection to treatment. Sending the plural of "messenger" to the family of the patient has no connection to treatment, whether they send them or not. This is something that has no connection to treatment; rather, it is related to reassuring them about his health. That is another matter. Yes.

The presenter: He complains about the abundance of these people in the country, meaning: in his country in Sudan. And he says: If what they say is repeatedly verified, is there knowledge of the unseen in this or not?

The Shaykh: Absolutely not. It is all invalid, but it may be repeated because they know something from their country. For example, they inform about a person who did such and such, or did such and such, and they may have seen it in other countries from Sudan, or things that the jinn informed them about, that this happened in such and such a country, and such and such was done for him, and such and such happened. So they take news from the jinn that the jinn perceived in some countries, and they inform their human allies of it. All of this has no validity, and it is never ruled that they know the unseen. The knowledge of the unseen belongs to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) . But there are matters that happen in some countries, and the jinn convey them to one another, or something is eavesdropped from the sky, a word they hear from the angels when they eavesdrop on the sky, and they convey it to their human allies. It may be true, and they heard it without it being confused for them, and it happens. And people think that everything they do, they say: "It is true," and they lie with that, along with much lying, as in the hadith:
and the latter would add to it one-hundred lies of their ownأنهم يكذبون معها مائة كذبة
Sahih al-Bukhari 3210
And in some narrations:
and then they add to it one-hundred liesيكذبون أكثر من مائة كذبة
Sahih al-Bukhari 6213
So do not pay attention to them, because their basis is lying, or seeking help from the jinn in the lying of the jinn, and in the falsehood they engage in, which they use to confuse people. We ask Allah for safety.
The jinn are like the humans; among them are disbelievers, among them are innovators, among them are open sinners, and among them are the good. So the open sinners are for the open sinners, the disbelievers are for the disbelievers, and the good are for the good. The jinn who serve some of the devils of the humans by informing them of some unseen matters that they heard from the sky, or that they heard from some countries, these are because they served them by worshipping them besides Allah, and slaughtering for them, and the like. So the jinn who serve them with these news, and these journeys in which they lie, and they may tell the truth in a little of it, so people think they are truthful in the rest. Yes.
