Question:
Our brother also asks and says: We have an imam for our mosque and a teacher of religious subjects. Patients come to him, and he makes an amulet for them, or he breaks a chicken egg in the patient's house in our province. Is the prayer behind him valid? May Allah preserve you.
Answer:
This is serious, and its evil is great. It is not permissible to do this action; for taking amulets is an innovation, and they are the amulets, called: the veils, and some people call them: the collections. So they are not permissible. And it is authentic from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:.
And the amulet is the amulet, and it is the collection in the custom of people today, and it is the veil as some people call it. It is something hung on children, or on the sick, or on adults, against the evil eye, or against the jinn. They write writings on pieces of paper, or place talismans or beads, or place cryptic letters that are cut up and whose meaning is unknown. They write them and put them in pieces of paper, and tie them on the boys, or on the sick, or on the adults; they claim that it repels the evil eye, or repels the jinn. All of this is invalid, all of this is wrong and an innovation; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) condemned it.
So it is obligatory for the believer to beware of that, and not to do that. And this is shirk (associating partners with Allah), and it is minor shirk. But if its owner believes that it benefits and harms apart from Allah; then this becomes major shirk—we seek refuge in Allah.
So the result is: that it is not permissible to engage in this thing, and likewise breaking the egg in the patient's house, or the house of Zayd or 'Amr, believing that it benefits him. This is superstition with no basis, rather it is from deception and lying and trickery. So such a person should not be taken as an imam, and it is not believed that he has more evil beliefs than this. It should not be prayed behind him, and he should be removed from the imamate, and one should strive in that, except if he repents with a sincere, apparent, prominent, and clear repentance; for repentance annuls what came before it, and Allah is the Helper.
