The Description of Sujud al-Sahw and Its Requirements

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
He says: Tell us about the requirements of sujud al-sahw, and its description?

Answer:
Sujud al-sahw is like the prostration in prayer; two prostrations, just like the prostration in prayer. In it, one says: Subhan Rabbi al-A'la (Glory be to my Lord, the Most High), Subhan Rabbi al-A'la, Subhanaka Allahumma Rabbana wa bihamdika, Allahumma ighfir li (Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and with Your praise; O Allah, forgive me). One makes supplication in it just as in the prostration of prayer, exactly the same. One says takbir when lowering oneself, takbir when raising oneself, takbir when prostrating for the second prostration, and takbir when raising oneself. It is like the prostration of prayer, the same in the takbir, in the tranquility, in the glorification, and in the supplication. The ruling is one. Yes.

The presenter: Its requirements, he says?

The Shaykh: I mean its causes, that is it.

The presenter: These are they.
AThe Shaykh: These are they, yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. Its description?

The Shaykh: It is this, like the prostration in prayer. One prostrates two prostrations just like his prostration in prayer, and says in them what he says in prayer, of glorification and supplication. Yes.

The presenter: Perhaps he means the causes of sujud al-sahw, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh: He said: Causes.

The presenter: Perhaps he erred in his expression.

The Shaykh: If one adds in prayer out of forgetfulness, or omits out of forgetfulness, this obligates him to perform sujud al-sahw. If he omits some of the obligatory acts out of forgetfulness, or some of the pillars out of forgetfulness and then performs them, or adds a rak'ah, or adds a bowing, or adds a prostration out of forgetfulness, whether he is an imam or praying alone, sujud al-sahw is obligatory upon him. For example, if he stands up for a fifth rak'ah in Zuhr, 'Asr, or 'Isha, or stands up for a fourth in Maghrib, or stands up for a third in Fajr or Jumu'ah, and then the people remind him, or he realizes it and returns to perform sujud al-sahw.
And likewise, if he adds a third prostration while forgetting, he performs sujud al-sahw. And likewise, if he adds a bowing while forgetting, he performs sujud al-sahw. And likewise, if he omits the glorification, Subhan Rabbi al-A'zim (Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent) in the bowing, or Subhan Rabbi al-A'la in the prostration while forgetting, he performs sujud al-sahw, just like the one praying alone.
But for something recommended, prostration is not obligatory. If he omits, meaning: he did not glorify except once, or twice, he does not owe sujud al-sahw. Or likewise, if for example he did not recite a surah after al-Fatihah, he does not owe sujud al-sahw; because it is a sunnah and recommended, he does not owe sujud al-sahw.
And likewise, if he forgets Rabbighfir li (My Lord, forgive me) between the two prostrations, or forgets Rabbana wa laka al-hamd (Our Lord, to You belongs all praise), he does not owe anything. He owes sujud al-sahw. But if the ma'mum is a ma'mum, he owes nothing. But if he is an imam and forgets an obligatory act, this is as mentioned before, he performs sujud al-sahw. But if he forgot the addition, like Rabbana wa laka al-hamd, he performed it, but forgot to complete it while standing, forgot to say: Hamdan kathiran.. and so on, or forgot to repeat: Rabbighfir li, he said it once, he does not owe sujud al-sahw, because he performed the obligatory act, and praise be to Allah.
So the obligatory act was performed. But if he forgot the recommended addition, he does not owe sujud al-sahw. And likewise, if the ma'mum forgets the obligatory act that is upon him, Rabbighfir li, or Subhan Rabbi al-A'la, or Subhan Rabbi al-A'zim, and he is a ma'mum, following his imam, he does not owe sujud al-sahw. As for all of them, the imam, the one praying alone, and the ma'mum, if they omit something recommended, there is nothing in it. The recommended, like: reciting a surah in addition to al-Fatihah, this is recommended, there is no sujud al-sahw in it. If he omits the audibility, he did not make it audible in Maghrib or in 'Isha at some times, he forgot the audibility, he does not owe sujud al-sahw. Or he made it audible in the secret prayers, like: Zuhr, and 'Asr, he made it audible while forgetting, he does not owe sujud al-sahw; because all of this is recommended.
So the result is: that sujud al-sahw is only obligatory if one omits an obligatory act. If one omits an obligatory act, or a pillar out of forgetfulness, the obligatory act is dropped by forgetfulness, but he owes sujud al-sahw. And the pillar, he must perform it, and he owes sujud al-sahw. If he omits the prostration, he performs the prostration, and he owes sujud al-sahw. He returns and performs the prostration. Or he forgets the bowing, he lowers himself and returns to perform the bowing, and he owes sujud al-sahw. So the bowing, he must perform it. If he forgets it completely until he begins the second rak'ah, the first rak'ah is dropped, and the other takes its place; because he neglected a pillar that is necessary.
As for if it is an obligatory act, like: the glorification in the bowing and prostration, saying: Rabbighfir li between the two prostrations, and saying: Rabbana wa laka al-hamd, and saying: Sami' Allahu li man hamidah (Allah hears the one who praises Him), all of these are obligatory acts. Whenever he omits them out of forgetfulness, they are dropped for the imam and the one praying alone. And likewise, if the ma'mum omits them, they are dropped for him. But the imam performs sujud al-sahw, and the one praying alone performs sujud al-sahw, and the ma'mum does not perform sujud al-sahw; if he omitted an obligatory act out of forgetfulness, he does not prostrate; because he is a follower of his imam. But the imam and the one praying alone perform sujud al-sahw. If he forgets Rabbighfir li, or Subhan Rabbi al-A'la in the prostration, or Subhan Rabbi al-A'zim in the bowing, the imam and the one praying alone perform sujud al-sahw as mentioned before. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
