The Reality of the Shaykhiyyah Method and the Ruling on Attending Its Gatherings

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The listener Abdullah Abu al-Hasan sent us this message, saying: Some people among us claim the Shaykhiyyah method, like the Naqshbandiyyah and Qadiriyyah methods and others. They gather with people in the mosques and invite them to repentance and spiritual excitement. One of them says: "I am authorized for this." Some of them mumble and speak in vague terms like "ha, hi, hu." They speak of the unseen. Does this have a reality and a karamah (miracle granted to a righteous person), or is this a matter of religious innovation and misguidance?
We ask for success in the answer, and may Allah guide you.

Answer:
These methods and their like are all methods of religious innovation (bid'ah), and it is not permissible to agree with them or participate in them, because they are innovations. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
'A'isha reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: He who innovates things in our affairs for which there is no valid (reason) (commits sin) and these are to be rejected.من أحدث في أمرنا هذا ما ليس منه فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718a
And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected.من عمل عملًا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b
It is not from the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to gather for "hu, hu, hu," or for speech that is not clear and not known. If there is a claim of knowledge of the unseen, this becomes the greatest abomination and the most evil deed. In fact, this is shirk (associating partners with Allah); because claiming knowledge of the unseen is a denial and disbelief. Knowledge of the unseen is known by none but Allah .
The conclusion is: These Sufi methods, the Naqshbandiyyah, Qadiriyyah, Shaykhiyyah, and their like, are all innovative methods. Nothing from them is permissible except what agrees with the pure Shari'ah. It is obligatory to avoid them and not participate in them, and not to do anything except what is known and brought by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), such as the remembrance of Allah alone, or with your brothers, each person remembering Allah between himself and his soul. As for the collective remembrance of Allah in the way of the Sufis, or "hu, hu, hu," or "Allah, Allah, Allah, Allah," or the like, or bringing supplications that are deniable and have no basis, or containing what indicates a claim of knowledge of the unseen, or containing what calls to what is wrong, or containing what indicates exalting the created being with an exaltation that does not befit it, but rather is not befitting except for Allah, all of this is not permissible. These methods must be guarded against, and they must be distinguished, and nothing from them should be approved except what agrees with the pure Shari'ah. What contradicts that must be forbidden and denied. And Allah is the Helper. Yes.
