Some Rulings on the Ten Days of Dhul-Hijjah and the Days of Tashriq

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
From the listening sister (A. A. S.) from Jeddah, Al-Nuzhah district, a message containing a case, in which she says:
I heard from my religion teacher at my school that it is recommended to fast the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah, and that righteous deeds in these days are the most beloved deeds to Allah . If this is true, then naturally the tenth day of Dhul-Hijjah, which follows the Day of 'Arafah, is the first of the Days of Tashriq, which are the days of the festival for Muslims, pilgrims and others. And what I know is that it is not permissible to fast the days of the festival. So what is your explanation of that, if fasting is forbidden on it, and it is one of the first ten days?
And what is the alternative tenth day if it is not fasted? And if I fast these days, am I required to fast all of them? Knowing that I fasted the sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth, and did not fast the tenth. Please clarify the number of days of the festivals of Fitr and Adha, as there is a difference of opinion regarding them? May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.

Answer:
The term "the ten" is used for the nine, and the day of the festival is not counted among them. The ten of Dhul-Hijjah, it is said: the ten of Dhul-Hijjah, and the meaning is the nine that are related to fasting. The day of the festival is not fasted by the consensus of the Muslims, by the consensus of the scholars. So if it is said: fast the ten, its meaning is: the nine. The last of them is the Day of 'Arafah. Fasting them is recommended, and a nearness to Allah. It is reported from the Prophet that he used to fast them, peace and blessings be upon him, and he said about them: "Indeed, the deeds in them are more beloved to Allah than the deeds in the rest of the days." He, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days. They said: O Messenger of Allah! Not even jihad in the cause of Allah? He said: Not even jihad in the cause of Allah, except for a man who goes out with his person and his wealth, and then returns from that with nothing.
Sahih Ibn Hibban 6:17
. So in these ten days, it is recommended to remember Allah, to say the takbir, to recite, and to give charity, including the tenth.
As for fasting, no, the tenth is not among them. Fasting is specific to 'Arafah and what comes before it. For the day of the festival is not fasted according to all the scholars. But as for what is related to remembrance, supplication, and charity, it is included in the ten, and the day of the festival.
And the days of the festival are three, besides the day of the festival: the eleventh, the twelfth, and the thirteenth. The total is four: the day of the festival and the three days of Tashriq. This is the correct view according to the scholars. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
The days of at-tashriq * are days of eating, drinking, and remembrance of God.أيام التشريق، أيام أكلٍ وشرب، وذكر الله 
Mishkat al-Masabih 2050
. So they are four with respect to Dhul-Hijjah: the Day of Sacrifice and the three days of Tashriq.
As for Ramadan; the festival is one day only, the first day of Shawwal. This is the festival, and what is other than it is not a festival. He may fast the second day of the month of Shawwal. So the festival is specific to the first day of Shawwal only. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. And as for Adha? May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh: Four, as mentioned before. The festival of Adha is four days: the tenth, the eleventh, the twelfth, and the thirteenth. These are all days of the festival that are not fasted, except the days of Tashriq are fasted with respect to the one who is unable to offer the sacrificial animal, the hady of Tamattu' and Qiran. It is a special dispensation for the one who is unable to offer the hady of Tamattu' and Qiran, to fast the three which are the days of Tashriq: the eleventh, the twelfth, and the thirteenth. Then he fasts the seven in his home, among his family. As for the day of the festival, it is not fasted, not for the hady, nor for anything else, by the consensus of the Muslims. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good. As for the festival of Fitr, it is one day only.

The Shaykh: Yes, one day only.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good. She mentioned, Your Eminence the Shaykh, that she fasted some of the days of the ten of Dhul-Hijjah. She mentioned that she fasted, for example, the seventh, the eighth, and the ninth. What is your guidance, given the situation as mentioned?

The Shaykh: Repeat.

The presenter: She says that she fasted some of the first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah.

The Shaykh: There is no harm if she fasted the seventh, the eighth, and the ninth; there is no blame. Or if she fasted more than that. The point is that they are days of remembrance and days of fasting. If she fasted all nine, that is good and fine. And if she fasted some of them, all of it is good. And if she limited herself to fasting only 'Arafah, it is the best of them, the Day of 'Arafah. The Day of 'Arafah about which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Indeed, the fasting of 'Arafah, I hope that Allah will expiate with it the year before it and the year after it.إن صوم عرفة، أحتسب على الله أن يكفر به السنة التي قبله، والتي بعده
. It is a great day, and it is recommended to fast it for both the people of the cities and the Bedouins. The Day of 'Arafah, except for the pilgrims, for they do not fast on the Day of 'Arafah. And so it is with the rest of the days, from the beginning of Dhul-Hijjah to the Day of 'Arafah, it is recommended to fast them, nine days. But the best of them is the Day of 'Arafah. It is fasted in the cities and the desert, it is a recommended practice, except for the day of the festival, which is not fasted, not in Hajj, nor in anything else. Yes. And the pilgrims do not fast on the Day of 'Arafah. The recommended practice for the pilgrim is not to fast on the Day of 'Arafah, but to be in a state of having broken the fast, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) broke his fast on the Day of 'Arafah. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you with good, and may He do you good.
