The Ruling on a Woman’s Hijab from a Blind Man

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The questioner, who used the code name Umm 'Abd al-'Aziz from Riyadh, says in her first question: Regarding a woman who studies with a blind male teacher, what is the ruling on hijab from the blind teacher?

Answer:
There is no hijab from a blind man. Hijab is from being looked at; one veils oneself from the one who looks. As for the one who does not look, there is no hijab from him. This is based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) to Fatimah bint Qays:
So better spend this period in the house of Ibn Umm Maktum, for he is a blind man and you can put off your garmentsاعتدي عند ابن أم مكتوم؛ فإنه رجل أعمى، تضعين ثيابك فلا يراك
Sahih Muslim 1480a
And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Verily! The order of taking permission to enter has been enjoined because of that sightإنما جعل الاستئذان من أجل النظر
Sahih al-Bukhari 6241
So the one who does not see has no hijab from him. It is not obligatory for a woman to veil herself from him. As for what is narrated from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said to 'Aishah and another wife with her when Ibn Umm Maktum entered:
Veil yourselves from him. Do you not see him?احتجبا عنه ألستما تبصرانه
It is a weak hadith that is not relied upon. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you, O Shaykh.
